VAZ 2109: windshield wiper repair - correct execution

If you are faced with the fact that your wipers on your VAZ 2114 are working slowly, do not worry. Many motorists have to deal with this problem; the problem lies in the mechanism used; it often fails. This is evidenced by numerous reviews from the owners of this model, and the reasons for the breakdown can be very diverse. Often products stop working due to imperfect design. Be sure that you will be able to modify the wipers of the VAZ 2114.

Frequent causes of breakdown

If you want to have fast wipers on your VAZ 2114, then you should figure out what causes the breakdown. The system on a car quickly wears out and becomes unusable, it is worth considering the main causes of breakdowns:

  1. A short circuit occurs in the winding, which is why it is worth carefully monitoring the operation of the structure. If you notice that the winding is worn out, then the best solution would be to replace it.
  2. The system levers have failed, this directly affects the operation of the wipers, in particular the speed.
  3. The problem may be that the brushes themselves are simply frozen to the glass; this often happens in winter. Therefore, in winter it is worth monitoring your brushes more carefully.
  4. Problems with power cords cause products to malfunction due to lack of power.
  5. Our roads are not blessed with the absence of stones, so it is worth checking whether a stone or other foreign object has entered the system. It is better to avoid such problems, since a foreign body can not only slow down the wipers, but also cause serious damage.

Generator test circuits

Connect the positive terminal of the battery through a light bulb (1-3 W, 12 V) to contact “61” of the magneto, and the negative terminal to one of the bolts attaching the rectifier unit.

When the light comes on, there is a short circuit somewhere in the additional diodes. You can detect a broken diode by removing the rectifier unit and checking each diode individually. A break in the additional diodes can be found with an oscilloscope by the distortion of the voltage curve at terminal “61”, and by the low voltage, below 14 V, at terminal “61” at an average speed of the magneto rotor.

For ease of fastening of rectifier parts, 3 valves (with red markings) contain “+” rectified voltage on the housing. These valves are “positive” and they are pressed into one plate of the rectifier block, connected to terminal “30” of the magneto. The other 3 valves (“-“, with black markings) contain a “minus” of the rectified voltage on the housing. They are pressed into another plate of the rectifier unit, connected to the “housing”.

The operating valve allows electricity to flow in one direction. Broken - may not pass electricity (open circuit), or pass electricity in both directions (short circuit).

How to solve a problem?

If you are thinking about how to increase the speed of the VAZ 2114 wipers, then you should look at the root of the problem. And the main reason lies precisely in the motor of the mechanism and the trapezoid of the structure. If you do not pay attention to your wipers for at least a couple of months, then as a result you will notice a decrease in the speed of their operation.

To prevent such a problem, it is necessary to take care of the mechanism in a timely manner, and to take care of it correctly.

To return the structure to the required speed, you will need to disassemble the mechanism, clean the motor, or you can sand it with sandpaper. It is also worth lubricating the hinges that are located between the slats. If such care does not help, then all that remains is to replace the product or take the car to a service center.

How to speed up wipers in intermittent mode?

If you are wondering how to make wipers faster on a VAZ 2114, then you should turn to the features of the wipers. This car has 3 wiper modes, namely intermittent, fast and normal.

Intermittent and normal modes imply movement of the brushes at the same speed, which is slightly less than in fast mode. You can set the speed in intermittent mode to be maximum, but in this case it will decrease in fast mode. In fact, to do this you need to swap the wires in the connector to which the wipers are connected. In order to determine which wires to change, it is worth looking at the diagrams.

Are you faced with the fact that your VAZ-2109 wipers are working slowly? It doesn’t matter, this problem haunts many motorists. A careless mechanism, which only yesterday worked like a clock, has a stupid habit of slowly and inexorably breaking down. This unpleasant feature of cars of this brand has already managed to annoy all owners of the VAZ model 2109, if you believe the reviews of the majority of domestic motorists.

There can be a huge number of reasons for this, and it is not always due to driver negligence. Windshield wipers often fail due to banal technical imperfections in the design of everyone's favorite VAZ. But you shouldn’t scold the manufacturers prematurely and go to a car service center. Speeding up a worn-out mechanism with your own hands is simple and anyone can do it.

Connection diagram for the rear wiper (rear window cleaner and washer) VAZ 2108, 2109

Rear “wiper” - the rear window cleaner is located on the rear door of VAZ 2108, 2109 cars. It consists of a gear motor, a lever and a brush (“wiper”). The rear window washer consists of an electric motor in the washer fluid reservoir, an electromagnetic valve for turning on the rear window washer, pipes through which the washer fluid is supplied and a nozzle above the rear door.

Features of electrical circuits for turning on the rear window cleaner and washer (rear wiper)

— Electric current enters the system for turning on the cleaner and washer from terminal “30” of the generator, when contacts “30” and “15/2” of the ignition switch are closed.

— The steering column switch (right, terminal “53ah”) receives current from the ignition switch, through fuse No. 4 (F7) and block Ш3 (Х3) of the mounting block.

— When contacts “53ah” and “53H” of the steering column switch are closed, the wiper motor on the rear door of the car is turned on; when contacts “53ah” and “WH” are closed, the rear window washer is turned on.

Notes and additions

— The rear window wiper on VAZ 2108, 21081, 21083, 2109, 21091, 21093 vehicles is activated by the right steering column switch: fixed position “pull away”. If the switch is pressed further (non-fixed position), the rear window washer motor will turn on. The washer is turned on via a time relay (K1) located in the mounting block, which allows it to turn off with a delay of 5 seconds after releasing the steering column lever. On vehicles with mounting block 2114 (for example, 2114-3722010-60), there is no time relay, and the flow of liquid stops immediately after the lever is released from the unfixed position.

— On VAZ 21099 cars there is no rear door glass cleaner and washer.

Common causes of malfunction

Why did the wipers start working slowly? This question is asked most often among VAZ owners. It just so happens that almost all cars of the 2109 model suffer from this disease. So why do the wipers not work? Why does the system wear out so quickly? Below is a list of the most common windshield wiper problems:

  1. Damage to system levers. Even a slight change in the shape of these parts can affect the speed of the mechanism.
  2. Faulty power cords. If there is not enough electricity supplied to the system, it is no wonder that it will slow down.
  3. Foreign objects in the mechanism. Any pebble or blade of grass that accidentally gets into the device can cause serious damage, not to mention slowdown.
  4. The blades are frozen to the windshield. In winter, you need to pay especially close attention to the mechanism if you do not want to tear off its frozen parts from the glass.
  5. Short circuit in the winding or excessive contamination of parts. The structure must be carefully monitored; it must be cleaned from time to time and the winding changed if necessary.

Windshield wiper is slow

The reasons why the wipers move slowly may depend on the following factors:

  • from low air temperature;
  • development of connection splines;
  • incorrectly operating electric motor.

With the onset of cold weather, the wipers may move slowly due to an increase in the viscosity of the lubricant in the gears of the gearbox. Usually, after the car warms up, the problem disappears. When making splines, the brushes will also move more slowly, as the tips of the levers rotate in the seats. The problem is solved by replacing worn parts.

True problems and ways to solve them

The mechanism’s motor and the windshield wiper trapezoid itself are the main pitfalls of this malfunction. Once you forget about them for just a couple of months, the wipers begin to slow down, gradually becoming unusable. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to find out about this problem. You can learn how to properly and promptly care for a car only by facing all its shortcomings face to face or by asking your friends, at worst.

The thing is that without timely cleaning and lubrication, both parts quickly wear out and eventually refuse to work. Trapezium malfunctions lead in frequency of occurrence. Either the hinges begin to jam, or the strips bend for unknown reasons. However, the motor is also not far behind. Coupled with the loss of voltage due to damage to the wires, the part causes many problems, sometimes forcing an inattentive driver to buy a new one if he does not check the serviceability of the electrical wiring.

So what can you do to return your wipers to their former speed?

The answer is simple: disassemble the mechanism, clean and sand the motor with sandpaper, lubricate the hinges located between the trapezoid bars - that’s all.

Unfortunately, if this does not help, and you have not found any other faults, only replacing parts or a trip to the service center can help you. However, replacing the notorious trapezoid or motor solves the problem in most cases.

Removing and checking the gearmotor and windshield wiper mechanism

Dismantling the mechanism is simple - just remove the brush leads and unscrew one fastening bolt. True, difficulties may arise with “pulling” the leashes off the axles - sometimes they “sit” quite firmly in the seats. Under the leads there are nuts for fastening the axle bushings, which are also the fastening elements of the trapezoid itself.

Having loosened the fasteners and disconnected the contact block, remove the mechanism from the air supply box. Before disconnecting the trapezoid drive arm from the gearmotor axis, remember the relative positions of the parts - in order to avoid such an incident as the wipers working in the opposite direction after assembly.

The windshield wiper motor is secured with three bolts on the trapezoid:

After removing the wiper motor and disassembling it, pay special attention to the condition of the brushes and commutator. If there are deep grooves on the collector, then it makes sense to replace the entire assembly - you can manually remove only small defects with sandpaper. Be sure to clean the collector slats (slots) with a blade or similar tool and rinse the armature with alcohol or gasoline. Slow operation of wipers is often caused by current leakage through blades clogged with graphite dust.

After checking, rinsing with gasoline and, if necessary, replacing the plastic gear of the gearmotor, assemble the assembly, having previously lubricated the gears with grease.

Inspect the levers of the mechanism - sticking hinges and bent rods can also cause poor wiper performance.

After installing the assembled trapeze, first evaluate the correctness of its operation without wearing the leashes tightly. It may well happen that the central lever was incorrectly installed on the axis of the gearmotor, as a result of which the wipers, after turning off, may “skip the parking lot,” stopping in the middle of the glass, or not fully return back to their original position. Then you will need to adjust the wiper mechanism by moving the lever.

The reason that the wiper blades rise when moving at high speed and do not press against the glass is the “sagging” of the springs of the arms. In this case, the leashes with spring assemblies are replaced.
