As for the manufacturer, it all depends on your preferences, although even factory SAAZs work quite well (I have 60,000 km without problems). I think that the same SS20 or ASOMI will be better than the factory ones, but for the rear ones there is no money yet to test them.

You will need: keys 6, 19 (two pieces), ring wrench 17.

13. Install the insulating gasket on the spring so that the spring end rests against the protrusion of the gasket. Attach the gasket to the spring using insulating tape so that it does not come off during installation of the spring.
14. Place the spring on the shock absorber strut so that its end rests against the protrusion on the lower cup.
15. Install the shock absorber strut from the rear suspension in the reverse order. The end of the lower spring coil must be facing towards the wheel itself.
16. Lower the car to the ground and rock it strongly several times. Finally tighten the nuts of the lower and upper fastenings on the shock absorber.
17. After 100 km, check and, if necessary, tighten these threaded connections at appropriate times.

After a long and cold winter, the rear pillars “cryed”, or rather began to leak. In winter, the temperature reached -45 (-48) degrees Celsius, Siberians will not let you lie.
Of course, you won’t see anything below -40 degrees on the instrument panel; this is the algorithm that was laid down at AvtoVAZ.
When I changed the right rear wheel, which was already trying to swell, oil leaks were discovered on the right, and also a little on the left side.
I purchased stock SAAZ rear shock absorbers. No SS-20s are needed, just stock. Sawing and lowering are not suggested, I know where I ride, this does not threaten me. Roads do not allow such luxury.
The old struts lasted 7 years and covered 63 thousand km. If it weren't for such a harsh winter, the racks would still go on and on. Well, okay.
I bought sound insulators for the spring cup of the SS-20 rear struts along with the struts. About 50/50 recommend/don’t recommend them. Until I try, I won’t trust anyone. Time and use will tell. I also took additional boots, bumpers and rubber bands.
Replacing rear struts
We change the racks ourselves, without any lifts. You will only need one more assistant to make it easier, although you can replace it with one.

I collected the necessary tools. This is the minimum required set. From a screwdriver to a sledgehammer.
Recline the rear seat. Use a screwdriver to pry out the cap, which has four petals; you can break them off if you pick too hard
Unscrew the nut with a 17 spanner wrench, holding the rack rod with a 6 spanner (if necessary). We take out the nut, engraver, and washer.
We tighten the spring with special ties so that you can remove and put the rack in its rightful place without much effort. Now we unscrew the rack. The lower mount of the rack with a 19 mm wrench. The WD key will of course help. On the left side, it was possible to pull out the mounting bolt without much effort.
I had to work hard with the right rack. No wrench, much less a sledgehammer, could help, even after removing the strut along with the spacer. I had to get the grinder involved.
We take off the racks and “admire” it. The top pillar in the photo was on the left side (it suffered the least damage). Well, this is confirmed by statistics. In left-handed cars, usually the right pillars are killed faster, in right-handed cars - on the contrary, on the left side. The anthers were not damaged, except that they were all covered in oil. The bumpers are alive and dirty
Now comes the fun part. Comparison of racks. I specifically squeezed the rod to show how far the right strut was finished. The rod dropped freely without much effort by 7 cm. The left rack had a dip of only 1 cm.
The anthers are covered in oil and dirt, respectively. I could wash it and leave it, but since I bought new ones, I’ll install them.
The bumpers have small tears. In principle, you can drive these, nothing will happen. Anyway, to replace them, fortunately, I took care of this in advance.
The rubber bands that secure the rack itself on both sides of the body have sagged. You can clearly see it on the right in the photo. I purchased 4 rubber bands in advance; I didn’t know what could happen to them in 5 years. You could have left them.
We assemble the stand and install it in its rightful place. We leave the old spring, just wash it thoroughly to understand its condition. It turns out that its color is gray, and not dirt-resistant...
The paint on the bottom turn has peeled off, which is not surprising. It will be like this for everyone. We clean off the peeling paint and coat it with a rust converter. It'll do.

Shock absorbers should be replaced immediately in pairs, since the service life of the left and right shock absorbers is approximately the same. Let's start replacing. First of all, fold back the rear seat and use a screwdriver to pry off the rear shock absorber rod plug
Then, use a special wrench or a 17 wrench to unscrew the nut, while holding the shock absorber rod itself with a 6 wrench. Now you can remove the nut and washer
For convenience, jack up the car and remove the wheel. We unscrew the lower mount of the shock absorber to the beam, having previously lubricated it with WD, and unscrew the nut with a 19 mm wrench. Don't forget to remove the mounting bolt itself
Now you can remove the shock absorber itself. We remove the spring, support washer, cushion and boot from it. If necessary, we replace these parts with new ones, or replace the old ones with a new shock absorber.
Installing a new shock absorber occurs in the reverse order. In this case, the lower end of the spring coil should face the wheel.

On the Lada Kalina, MacPherson suspension has improved ride quality. Starting with Kalina, all new AvtoVAZ models began to be equipped with MacPherson strut suspension. When driving, the level of impact of a bad road on the body is much more effectively reduced, making driving a car much more comfortable than, for example, a VAZ 2109, where a similar type of suspension is installed.
Thus, the independent MacPherson suspension consists of two axle shafts, allowing the wheels to be practically independent of each other. This means that the wheels, when one of them hits a bump, a depression or something else, do not change the level of inclination, as is the norm in semi-independent and dependent suspensions.
Differences between the front suspension of Kalina and previously produced AvtoVAZ cars
All AvtoVAZ cars had a MacPherson strut suspension at the front, but it was significantly different from those used in the 70s, 80s and 90s by Ford, Fiat, Volkswagen, etc. So, the main differences between the MacPherson strut suspension and the suspensions of Lada models until 2004 are concluded as follows:
- Instead of a bearing, a bushing is mounted in the MacPherson.
- In MacPherson, the ball bearing has a larger radius, and the design also differs. Now it is located in the upper part between the support and the spring element in a compressed state, which perfectly helps to remove knocks when moving.
- When the wheels turn, the front suspension strut, or rather its body, rotates with the spring simultaneously. When this happens, the shock absorber rod remains motionless.
Removing the shock absorber and spring
We carry out the work when replacing a shock absorber, compression stroke buffer or spring. We install the car on an inspection ditch or overpass. Recline the rear seat back. We pry it off with a screwdriver.

Using a 17mm z-shaped wrench, unscrew the nut of the upper shock absorber mounting, holding the shock absorber rod from turning with a special wrench.
Remove the support washer.
. and top pillow. We hang up the rear wheels.
Using a 19mm wrench, unscrew the nut of the bolt for the lower shock absorber mounting to the beam, holding the bolt from turning with a wrench of the same size.
We take out the bolt. If there is difficulty, knock out the bolt with a soft metal drift.
We take out the shock absorber along with the spring. The spring gasket usually sticks to the body, from where it must be removed and ensure that there are no deformations or tears.
Remove the spring gasket.
Remove the spring from the shock absorber.
Remove the spacer sleeve with the lower cushion from the rod. Remove the cover with the compression stroke buffer.
We take out the compression stroke buffer from the case.
Remove the cup from the case. We assemble and install the rear suspension shock absorber in the reverse order.
For ease of assembly, we recommend attaching the gasket to the spring with adhesive tape or insulating tape, which will make it easier to install it in the body, while the end of the spring coil should rest against the protrusion of the gasket.
We put the cover on the cup, while the corrugation of the cover should be put on the flange of the cup.
We insert the compression stroke buffer into the case so that its corrugated part is at the bottom.
The end of the lower coil of the spring should rest against the protrusion of the shock absorber support.
To make installation easier, you can attach a piece of hose to the end of the rod.

We install the shock absorber so that the shallower recess (shown by the arrow) under the spring faces the wheel, while the end of the lower coil of the spring on the left side of the car will face the rear of the car, and on the right - to the front. We secure the lower end of the shock absorber, but do not tighten the nut. Lowering the car onto the wheel or lifting this side of the beam with a jack, insert the end of the shock absorber rod into the hole in the body and secure it. Shock absorbers for Kalina VAZ 1117, 1118, 1119 are practically no different from each other, except for the size of the cup for the shock absorber spring in the VAZ 1119 model. For the conveyor, these chassis spare parts are produced at the SAAZ plant.
Tool for getting the job done
In order for the work to be completed in the shortest possible time, it is important to have all the necessary tools at hand:
- The key is "6", "17", "19".
- Flathead screwdriver.
- Spring ties.
- Heavy hammer.
- WD-40.
- The collar and levers for them.
- Mount.
- New racks and components for them.
When all the tools are prepared, you can start working.
Step-by-step work order
- Place the car on a flat surface and turn on the handbrake. Check its operation, that it is not loose and adjusted.
- We hang the rear wheels one at a time; the order in this case does not matter.
- Then we get to work in the cabin, and by folding back the rear seat, using a flat-head screwdriver, we remove the decorative cap that covers the pillar rod.

Front shock absorbers for Kalina 1117, 1118, 1119
According to their technical parameters, front shock absorbers for Kalina are divided into right-hand and left-hand, and for VAZ 1119 models the cup width will be smaller than for VAZ 1117 and 1118. Shock absorbers with the article number right. 11182905002 / lion 11182905003 were installed on the VAZ 1117 and 1118 of the first modifications. And the details with art. number 11192905002 (right), 11192905003 (left) were installed on VAZ 1119 of all model series and VAZ 1117 and 1118 latest versions.
