Where is the diagnostic connector located in a Lada Granta car?

How to use the diagnostic block

1 . Directly to destination. To diagnose a car using an adapter that is connected to a computer or phone, or to a special diagnostic device.

2. For the purpose of having fun. Connect the adapter and install the Torque program on your phone, connect to it using a Bluetooth connection, and you can view the data online. And if you have a phone with GPS, then you can measure acceleration to 100 km/h, time to cover a section, etc.

3. View engine temperature. Since the first versions of the car did not have an engine temperature indication on the instrument panel, many owners used a diagnostic connector to connect on-board computers, which show many parameters, including engine temperature. And since most Grant owners complain about the low operating temperature of the engine, on-board computers are a very popular solution to this problem.

Self-diagnosis allows you not only to find errors present in the unit’s memory, but also to save the owner financial resources. To implement the process, you can use a regular laptop, the memory of which already contains a pre-purchased scanning program. Within 1-2 minutes, this software will check the car system and provide results for all parameters of the engine and other components, and indicate where the fault is located.

General questions about OBD2 on Grant

Let's look at questions about OBD2 on Grant - a diagram of what it is needed for.

How to use the connector

The main options for using OBD2 in Grant:

  • Connecting a scanner to check the car and work with errors;
  • Installation and connection of an on-board computer of the State or Multitronics type.

It will be useful to connect the on-board computer - this is how you can:

  1. monitor engine temperature ;
  2. receive error codes immediately when they occur;
  3. force the cooling fan to turn on.

The contact diagram of the block is shown in the picture:

The pinout of the block can be useful in the manufacture of adapters for OBD2.

General requirements for OBD

The no OBD regulations establish minimum basic requirements by law. However, there are only slight differences between European and American requirements.

Basic requirements for OBD systems:

  • catalyst control;
  • particulate filter control;
  • control of lambda probes;
  • misfire detection;
  • recognition of incomplete combustion;
  • fuel system control;
  • control of the additional air intake system;
  • control of the exhaust gas recirculation system;
  • control of the fuel tank ventilation system;
  • cooling system control;
  • valve control system control;
  • registration of working conditions;
  • standardized management of malfunction indicators (MIL);
  • standardized diagnostic interface;
  • message about the system’s readiness for testing (readiness code);
  • protection against interference and manipulation of the ECU;
  • control of special automatic transmission functions (related to exhaust gas).

To meet these requirements, a variety of sensors are needed to monitor the engine electronics, exhaust tract and exhaust pattern. Constant self-diagnosis and signal plausibility checks guarantee comprehensive control. Malfunctions that occur after standardization are recorded in a memory device. Despite this sophisticated technology, engineers cannot abandon the well-established direct diagnostic methods. Constant monitoring of the vehicle, such as emission testing, is still needed.

OBD systems, through sensors, must continuously detect, analyze and record at least the following engine parameters and operating conditions:

  • engine temperature;
  • mixture adaptation;
  • engine load;
  • fuel pressure;
  • engine speed;
  • movement speed;
  • fault information;
  • car mileage;
  • fault codes;
  • pressure in the inlet pipe;
  • supply voltage;
  • state and function of the lambda control circuit.

Additionally, other important quantities are determined and analyzed - oil temperature, ignition timing, air flow, throttle position, valve timing, air conditioning function, crankcase ventilation, exhaust temperature and automatic transmission function. However, there are some differences between the definition of values in EOBD and CARB OBD II.

Features of the Scanmatic-2 scanning kit

The designated set can be easily found in the retail chain. It fits such a thing as the diagnostic connector on a Lada Granta car, but will require the use of a laptop. The Scanmatik-2 package initially includes a scanning program. The cost of such a device (set), according to the official website, is 13,700 rubles. In terms of applicability to domestic cars, this is the best option for scanning, as evidenced by many reviews from diagnosticians.

To diagnose it yourself, first of all we boot up the laptop and activate the required program. Using a “USB” format cable, we connect the computer with the vehicle’s diagnostic socket. In the dispatch menu of Windows devices, we find the appearance of a “fresh” “COM” port, which we “register” in the settings. We insert a cord with an “OBD-2” connector into the diagnostic connector, which is connected with a “USB” cable using the adapter included in the delivery kit. We control the glow of the green lamp, which is equipped with the OBD diagnostic connector, which indicates the correct connection. After launching the special program, activate the “Engine” tab and click on the “Auto-detection” symbol. This allows the program to identify the on-board car computer on the Lada Granta.

If identification is not carried out automatically, then it is possible to manually select the name of the modification (in our version, “VAZ”) from the versions present in the software registry. A menu will appear on the display allowing you to select the ECU. There are cases when the program fails to determine the brand of the on-board controller, for example, when the software was previously “reflashed”.

After communication has been established between the ECU and the diagnostic tool, a list containing diagnostic modes is displayed on the screen. We enter the working window and get the opportunity to view the list of parameters, as well as adjust their settings. This point helps not only to find the fault, but also to improve the configuration of any system. To implement this action, you will need to enter the section called “Settings”. The “View” menu allows you to adjust the settings of the “Blutooth” function in case of using a wireless switching method.

The user of a Lada Granta car can create a set of parameters, which can subsequently be extracted from a list of values pre-present in the program. For example, using this method you can create a specific set that allows you to check the idle speed of the engine, and then save the data and use it an unlimited number of times in the future.

Upon completion of the diagnostic process, we return to the program menu for selecting the ECU and deactivate the ignition.

For the pros - 4 out of 5

Independent computer diagnostics of Lada Granta cars is available to every owner of this car, since Grants were the first to integrate a CAN bus into the ECU. Thanks to this, there will be no problems connecting a simple ELM327 diagnostic adapter, and the diagnostic program can be downloaded for free from the Internet.

This manual describes in detail the process of reading data from the ECU, as well as which scanner and program to choose for Ganta diagnostics. The article contains useful links to more detailed instructions, as well as reviews.

Location of the diagnostic connector in my Grant (photo)

In my Lada Granta, the diagnostic connector is located to the left of the glove compartment under the instrument panel. The reference point for the search is the passenger foot air nozzle. If you draw a parallel from the top point into the panel, you will see a diagnostic connector.

In my opinion, not a very good location. Let me explain why. If you want to use this connector to permanently connect the ELM327 (diagnostic adapter), then, depending on the model, it will stick out a little, so moisture from the passenger’s feet may get inside it. Also, strong passengers may accidentally try to tear it off or press it with their feet, which can cause damage.

A passenger may accidentally trip the diagnostic connector with their foot.

But, it seems to me, the designers of AvtoVAZ decided to save on wires and not lead the diagnostic connector block to a more convenient place. And they didn’t have a goal to make this connector for permanent connection. Although it is to this connector that on-board computers, such as Multitronics VC731, are connected.

What are the advantages of an auto scanner?

“Scanmatik-2” is naturally appreciated by many professional diagnosticians. Having tried this kit once, the owners were very impressed by its functionality, which allows them to diagnose the ECU not only in representatives of the family of domestic cars, such as the Lada Granta, but also in some foreign cars.

The “OBD-2” connector stably supplies power to the adapter terminals. In emergency situations, it is possible to power the Scanmatik-2 from the passenger compartment cigarette lighter.

This device is noted as very convenient for self-scanning. It also has a protective function that levels out on-board voltage surges. For example, if you power the system from the cigarette lighter socket at a time when it does not need this action, then no excesses will appear.

Any type of device has its positive and negative aspects. Hijackers today have learned to use almost the entire range of such parts as the diagnostic connector for their unfriendly purposes. In most situations, criminals use this block to disable the standard immobilizer.

If you need to protect yourself and your Lada Granta car, we recommend that you resort to the common solution of replacing the original block with a “re-pinned” version that has a different arrangement of the contact group, you now know where the required element is located. The adapter includes a “male” (fake connector) and a “female” (i.e. standard block), which implies preliminary removal.

Granta is easy to diagnose - the connector is not covered by anything and is accessible from the passenger compartment. For VAZ 2110, 2111, 2112 you can make a simple adapter or buy a ready-made one from China.

We use the connector itself to connect a scanner and work with errors, or to connect an on-board computer.

Instructions for working with the ELM327 scanner and the course of action if the “check” lights up are here.

Preventive measures

In order for the factory wiring of the Lada Grant to serve for a long time and not break, experienced experts strongly recommend following a number of simple rules.

  1. Periodically check all contact connectors and terminals for oxidation and rust. Such damage to the connections can cause a short circuit and a critical decrease in the conductivity of the line, which is perceived by the on-board computer as an error or breakdown.
  2. Use only original consumables and electronic components. The use of counterfeit products does not guarantee the functionality of the circuit. At the same time, some elements, when damaged, cause a voltage drop in the network, which becomes a direct cause of failure of other equipment or a fire.
  3. Use special oil to treat contact groups. The fluid is sold in auto shops or electronics stores. After treatment, the contacts are covered with a moisture-impermeable layer, which increases their service life by 2-3 times.
  4. Carefully monitor the charge level and condition of the battery. The wiring of the Lada Granta critically perceives a significant voltage drop in the on-board circuits. As a result, this may cause damage to the firmware of electronic control units.

Diagnostic connector for Lada Granta

The diagnostic connector of the Lada Granta car is designed according to the OBD-2 standard. On the Lada Grant, the diagnostic connector allows you to read almost all the information about the composition of the mixture and other data stored in the car controller. This is the operating mode of the fuel correction, the temperature of the coolant and intake air, and other data. The connector has 16 contacts and is located in the passenger compartment, to the left of the glove box, at the passenger’s feet, next to the ventilation deflector.

The arrow in the photo indicates the location of the diagnostic connector. It’s not that difficult to remove and install the Diagnostic Link Connector yourself. To remove the ECU yourself, disconnect the negative cable of the on-board battery and remove the screw securing the floor covering. Next, you need to peel back the upholstery and soundproofing coating to directly see the block itself, secured with 3 nuts.

Where is the diagnostic connector on the Lada Granta?

The OBD port has been actively used in cars all over the world since the beginning of the 21st century. The AvtoVAZ concern began installing an OBDII port in its models, starting with the Lada Kalina. By the way, before this period the tenth family had a 12-pin plug.

Note: the Granta diagnostic connector does not require access devices, since it is quite possible to detect and use it blindly. For example, on a Lada Kalina, to connect, you should remove the plug next to the gearshift lever.

The purpose of the car diagnostic connector is to quickly exchange data with diagnostic devices. This makes it possible to both read and delete error codes and adjust some presets in RAM. In addition, it is possible to read the current value of the sensor identifiers specified on the Lada Granta. However, in order to be able to use these functions, you must first know where the diagnostic connector itself is located.

Diagnostics 2110

The tenth generation VAZ received a 12-pin diagnostic block. These began to be installed on cars as Euro-3 and higher standards were introduced.

Why is OBD2 not suitable for 10?

Frets of the tenth family received their own connection option for diagnostics. You cannot connect a standard international to it

The reason is that tens have a 12-pin connector. OBD2 has 16 pins.

Adapter for ELM327 and OBD2

News - you can assemble an adapter for tens . Need to:

  • Connection diagram;
  • 4 wires;
  • New OBD2 format plug (if you don’t want to connect the wires directly to the scanner every time).

Electric power steering

When the EPS diagnostic light comes on or the electric power steering switches on/off after a certain period of time, you first need to check the EPS using the diagnostic connector. Open Diag (application) together with an OBD-2 adapter or scanners will help here:

The diagnostic process is designed to indicate where errors are located and decipher them for further repair based on the type of malfunction. In addition, it is quite possible to perform the check without a scanner:

  1. There is an 8-pin connector (black) under the ignition switch under the steering wheel. It is necessary to dismantle the casing at the steering column (unscrew the fastening screws from below).
  2. Insert the paper clip, closing the two contacts.
  3. Turn on the ignition and observe the warning lamp.
  4. The first signal will be the continuous burning of the lamp (“1”).
  5. It is necessary to count subsequent short signals, that is, if there are 3 short ones, then “3”.
  6. In our case, the code “13” should be formed.

ScanMaster-ELM

Paid program

ScanMaster-ELM is one of the few programs suitable for computer diagnostics of almost all makes and models of cars equipped with an OBD-II connector. This is the development of German programmers from WGSoft, a company specializing in writing automated diagnostic software for cars and motorcycles. Unfortunately, the ScanMaster-ELM program is not free, and does not support the Russian language (but its popularity in Russia is great, which is why amateurs have developed Russifiers, although not entirely complete ones).

The developers of ScanMaster-ELM describe their product as follows: “Any electronic vehicle modules that support OBD-II (i.e., exchanging technical data with the ECU) are automatically recognized by the program and can be diagnosed.” And we are talking not only about engines, but also about transmissions, automatic transmissions, brake systems and other electronic and electromechanical components of the car.

ScanMaster-ELM provides full functionality when working with ELM237 adapters, providing users with the following capabilities:

  • Supports all types of ELM237 adapters - RS232, USB, Bluetooth and WLAN, working using K-Line, KWP2000, J1850 VPW/PWM protocols and 4 types of CAN (11/250, 11/500, 29/250 and 29/500).
  • Reading the current parameters of control systems with subsequent presentation of real-time streaming data in the form of tables and graphs.
  • Obtaining parameters saved by the ECU at the time of errors.
  • Obtaining fault codes stored in the ECU memory and their detailed description.
  • Erasing fault codes, copies of current system parameters, and results obtained during sensor testing from the ECU memory.
  • Reading and displaying test results for oxygen sensors.
  • View test results for systems responsible for catalyst control, exhaust gas recirculation and fuel tank ventilation.
  • Run internal diagnostic tests of the fuel-air mixture, misfires, and components that affect the operation of the exhaust system, with the ability to view the results in real time.
  • Management of all on-board systems controlled by the ECU.
  • Obtaining VIN codes and calibration data of the vehicle being diagnosed.
  • View error codes that were previously cleared.
  • Visualization on a computer of information from the car’s dashboard (tachometer, speedometer, thermometer, etc.).
  • Obtaining real-time data on absolute pressure in the intake manifold, mass fuel consumption and other systems.
  • Testing (measuring) engine power with preset vehicle parameters (up to tire sizes and weight of driver and passengers) and gearbox in all operating modes (gear numbers).
  • Ability to customize your own configuration tables (PID parameter sets) and much more.

As a bonus, the ScanMaster-ELM program provides special diagnostic modes for Opel and Alfa cars.

The ScanMaster-ELM program is available for smartphones running iOS (paid) and Android (free, but with reduced functionality). At the time of writing the review, the cost of one licensed copy of the ScanMaster-ELM program was €75.

OBD-II connector specifications

The OBD-II specification provides for a standardized hardware interface – the female 16-pin (2×8) J1962 connector. Unlike the OBD-I connector, which was found under the hood of the vehicle, the OBD-II connector is located on the driver's side of the passenger compartment near the center console.

Refer to related pinouts for vendor-specific OBD-2 pinouts.

Instructions for diagnosing the Lada Granta via OBD2 connector with your own hands via a laptop or smartphone

Determine where the OBD2 connector is located

Determine which scanner is suitable for your car

The selection of a scanner (adapter) for LADA GRANTA depends on the ECU model, as well as the needs of the diagnostician / car owner.

To select diagnostic equipment, use the calculator: “Selecting a scanner for the Lada Granta”

Scan Tool Pro - budget multiscanner for LADA GRANTA

A good choice for a novice diagnostician

Nowadays there are scanner models with different versions of firmware and chips on sale. Scan Tool Pro with firmware 2021 is the most stable version so far, and also has maximum compatibility with cars manufactured since 2001, including LADA and VAZ.

Diagnostics and testing of the electronic gas pedal

VAZ supplies LADA GRANTA cars with an electronic gas pedal (E-gas) to comply with modern environmental standards.
If the pedal is malfunctioning (no responsiveness or increased engine speed when changing speed on the gearbox), then before dismantling and checking the unit with a multimeter, read the errors through the OBD2 connector.

Typical errors related to the accelerator pedal:

  • The “Check Engine” light came on on the dashboard (error 0504);
  • Error: Low/High signal level of the first accelerator pedal sensor.

Removing errors will not help here; you need to eliminate the cause of the breakdown and only then erase the errors. If errors are indicated and the pedal does not work stably, you should adjust the sensitivity of the gas pedal itself, it should become more responsive.
