Air filter Lada Granta: where is it located and how to replace it

Replacing the air filter on a Lada Granta: Step-by-step instructions

Not all Lada Granta owners pay attention to replacing the engine air flow filter. Meanwhile, this device plays a significant role in the efficient operation of your car's engine.

Just as a person needs clean air for normal existence, so does the heart - the engine of your car - need a clean flow of atmospheric air. Just as dirty street air negatively affects our health, the dust and dirt of city roads leads to a decrease in car engine power.

When the filter element becomes dirty, the car engine begins to consume more fuel to achieve the required torque.

If the critical amount of dirt and dust located on the surface of the filter element is exceeded, the pollutants located there can be spontaneously released into the sleeve-piston group. Dirt particles settle on the working surfaces of the engine cylinder and on the pistons. In the worst cases, such clogging can lead to engine failure.

Car manufacturers, including the Volzhsky Automobile Plant, recommend replacing replacement air flow filter elements after a certain mileage.

However, the aggressive environment in which your vehicle is operated can cause the service life of the air filter to be significantly reduced.

On the other hand, using a car in places with a favorable environmental situation will have a positive effect on the service life of replaceable filter elements.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the air filter on a Lada Granta

The air filter on the Lada Granta can easily be replaced at home, without special technological training and using a minimum set of necessary tools. Also, by regularly checking the condition of the working surfaces of replaceable filter elements, you can accurately determine the required time to replace the filter.

Replacing the air filter on a Lada using the example of Priora and Granta

On the Lada Priora and Grant models, the structure of the air filter box is identical, with the only difference being the location (on the Priora, the filter is installed to the right of the cylinder block, and on the Grant, you need to look for it behind the right headlight). To dismantle it you need: a Phillips screwdriver and a vacuum cleaner. And the filter replacement process itself occurs in 7 simple steps:

1). Preparing the engine (during operation, the engine and associated components heat up to a temperature of over 100 degrees. Therefore, before entering the engine compartment, the engine must be allowed to cool).

2). Disabling the mass flow sensor connector (on the pipe going from the filter to the block there is a connector with a wire that must be disconnected. To do this, just press the latch located on the plug body and remove the wire from the socket).

3). Removing the air filter housing cover (using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the four mounting screws located at the edges of the upper filter cover).

4). Removing the used filter element (after removing the cover, access to the air filter itself opens. But to dismantle it, you must first bend the corrugated air duct).

5). Cleaning the filter box (by removing the used filter element from the housing, paired with a rubber seal, you need to prepare the space for the new part, clearing it of accumulated dust and dirt. To do this, you can take a regular vacuum cleaner with a flexible tube).

6). Installing a new filter (after cleaning the box, the new filter element is placed in a special space, with the sealing rubber facing up. The edges of the seal are pushed into the bottom of the box, along the entire perimeter, and the corrugated air duct is bent back to its previous position).

7). Assembling the box (the air filter housing cover is installed on the bottom of the box so that all four holes fit into their grooves. Using a Phillips screwdriver, factory screws are screwed into the mounting holes. At the end of the procedure, be sure to connect the DRVM connector on the inlet pipe).

The condition of the filter element can be assessed visually: the presence of dust in the honeycombs, contaminated fibers, etc. Although this is not at all necessary during scheduled maintenance.

Types of air filters

Structurally, the following types of air purification filters can be noted:

  • Panel ones, in which the filter surface forms a plane.
  • Cylindrical, in which the filter surface forms a cylinder.
  • Frameless.

The most common material in the manufacture of an air filter is ordinary cardboard, but sometimes manufacturers use synthetic fiber in the manufacture of filter elements. Such air filters require increased attention from the car owner.

On some cars, most often sports models, so-called zero-resistance filters are installed.

Zero resistance filters consist of several layers of dense gauze, with special oil impregnation.

Compared to conventional filters, the air flow sucked into the engine intake manifold spends much less energy traveling from the external environment to the engine cylinders if a zero-resistance filter is installed on the car.

In addition, zero resistance air filters can be serviced instead of being replaced.

Maintenance consists of high-quality impregnation of the filter element with special oil.

Replacing the cabin filter on a Lada Granta

Replacing the cabin filter is not a difficult job. It will take you about ten minutes and does not require any special knowledge. To get started, we will need a Phillips and Torx20 screwdriver. Using a Torx20 screwdriver, unscrew the cover under the windshield.

Then use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws that block access to the cabin filter.

By dismantling the protective covers, we have access directly to the cabin filter. The filter itself is in a plastic frame. If your new filter does not have a plastic frame, then you need to remove the old filter from the frame and insert a new one in its place.

Also, do not forget the differences in filters. There are regular and carbon filters on store shelves. Conventional filters protect the interior from dust, while carbon filters are also capable of retaining some of the carbon dioxide, sulfur deposits and other low-quality impurities from the car exhaust. Coal ones, as a rule, cost three times more, but their purchase will be justified for cars operated in megacities.

If you absolutely do not know which filter to ask in the store, then ask the seller for a filter for Kalina, they are interchangeable. The catalog number of the factory filter is 1118-8122010-01. This filter is sold without a plastic frame, which can be used from an old filter, so there is no need to overpay extra money.

Location of the VAZ Granta air filter

Regardless of the modification of the Lada Grant, the air system element is located in the engine compartment, on the right side, closer to the optics.

The filter is placed in a special plastic box to protect it from water, debris, and dirt. However, when driving at high speeds through puddles, water still penetrates into the inlet and the paper cleaner gets wet.

Air filter functions

The mass composition of the fuel mixture for high-quality combustion in the engine cylinders consists of 14 parts of air and 1 part of gasoline, that is, when burning 1 kg of gasoline, the volume of which is approximately 1 liter, 14 kg of air is consumed.

This makes it clear how much air passes through the engine cylinders during active operation.

Air, in the quantity necessary for engine operation, enters the intake manifold from the environment, which is often significantly polluted.

A device that cleans the air entering the engine intake tract from various contaminants and is an air filter.

A working air filter effectively cleans the air entering the engine intake manifold from small and large abrasive particles, dust, insects and other contaminants.

With active use of the car, over time, the air filter becomes clogged with dust and dirt. The air sucked into the engine intake tract enters there in less quantity. What causes a change in the stoichiometric composition of the combustible mixture, in which the mass fraction of gasoline increases, that is, the mixture becomes over-enriched and does not burn completely.

If the air filter is faulty:

  1. The car loses traction and its power is significantly reduced.
  2. Fuel efficiency decreases and gasoline consumption increases.
  3. The content of toxic substances in exhaust gases increases significantly.

Important! It is important to understand that a faulty air filter does not clean the incoming air from dirt, but is a source of problems for the engine, which after a certain period of time will lead to its repair.

The process of replacing the air filter yourself

So, how to remove the Grant air filter at home:

  • We place the car within the perimeter of the repair area, squeeze the handbrake, open the hood;
  • at the location of the purifier - the right side of the engine compartment, unscrew the four fasteners, remove the contact board of the Grant air filter sensor (DMRT);
  • move the cover to the side and remove the element;
  • We carry out preventive maintenance and cavity cleaning;
  • We lay the new one and complete the assembly.

Some motorists practice not removing the air flow sensor block. This method is also applicable, but not as effective, since the free play of the cover is too limited.

Instructions for replacing the air filter on a Lada Granta yourself + photos and videos

The air filter is located in the front right part of the vehicle's engine compartment, next to the battery and expansion tank. First, open the hood and determine its location.

1. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the 4 mounting screws (shown in the photo) on the cover of the air filter housing.

2. Open the lid by simply grabbing it from above.

3. Pull out the old filter and put it aside.

4. Using a damp cloth or sponge, carefully wipe the inside surface of the box body and filter cover, removing dirt and dust. It is important to prevent them from getting inside the air intake.

5. Install a new air filter, having previously inspected it for mechanical damage.

6. Close the lid and tighten the screws.

As you can see, the process of replacing the filter is very simple and will not take much of your time. Don't forget to change the air filter every 10-15 thousand km.
