How to change the radiator of the VAZ-21124 heating system on old and new stoves

Interior heating systems on different vehicles have a similar design. In a VAZ-21124 car, the heater functions as follows:
  • the stove control unit controls the set air heating temperature with an acceptable error of about 2 degrees;
  • Air heating for interior heating is carried out in the heater radiator. It has a standard design and is made of copper or aluminum alloys;
  • To supply air into the cabin, special deflectors are provided that regulate the direction of its flow;
  • On the heater control panel there are: a fan operating mode switch with sliders that control the heater dampers.

One of the most common problems with the heating system on the VAZ-2112 is its depressurization, which is characterized by leakage of coolant from under the central panel. One of the reasons for this is the failure of the radiator, in which case it needs to be replaced.

Aluminum VS Copper: which radiator to choose?

Many years of experience in operating radiators made of various materials on domestic cars (including the VAZ-2112), it was noticed that its performance is not affected by the material from which it is made. Both copper and aluminum devices heat equally well.

The only criterion when choosing a radiator is its originality, since only a serious manufacturer is capable of producing a quality product. Therefore, when purchasing a heater radiator, it is necessary to pay attention to this criterion.

So, where exactly is the radiator of the VAZ-2112 stove? In the design of the interior heating system, the radiator is located inside the heater housing, occupying a horizontal position in relation to the central panel.

The reason why you need to replace the VAZ 2110 heater radiator is an antifreeze leak or poor performance (clogging).
Antifreeze often escapes from the radiator through damage, or through loose hoses. Since it is impossible to identify the exact cause without disassembling the engine shield, the VAZ 2110 heater will be disassembled and removed. In this case, the heater radiator is removed from a car manufactured before September 2003, that is, we are dealing with an old model. The procedure for removing and replacing the stove radiator of the old and new models has minor differences.

To replace the stove radiator you will need:

  • antifreeze,
  • new heater radiator,
  • 4 things. clamps.

How to remove and replace the heater radiator on a VAZ-2112 (old model)?

A leak of cooling fluid in the cabin is a direct prerequisite for the need to change the heating radiator, since it is already out of order.

Note that models older than 2003 have an old-style stove installed. However, towards the end of this year, the cars were already equipped with a new heater. Accordingly, they have some structural differences, and therefore are removed and installed differently.

Replacing the radiator on the VAZ-2112 stove:

  1. We free the system from antifreeze by draining it through the hole in the power unit block or through the expansion tank. If you choose the second option, you must remove the ignition module. Next, remove the lid from the tank, and then uncork the drain plug. If there is no sediment in the coolant, that is, it is in a clean state, it can be reused.
  2. It is necessary to remove the hood seal, which is located next to the frill.
  3. The screw fixing the frill should be unscrewed, and then the screws securing its upper part should be unscrewed.
  4. Loosen the clamps and remove all wires and hoses from the frill.
  5. Disconnect the vehicle's power supply by removing the terminals from the power source.
  6. On the left side of the frill there are two screws that must be unscrewed to remove the element. There is no need to remove it.
  7. Remove the front cover.
  8. You will need to remove the terminal (if any) from the liquid level control sensor in the system, as well as the steam removal hose from the expansion tank.
  9. Remove the hose from the front windshield washer.
  10. After unscrewing the four screws, you need to remove the windshield wipers with the windshield trim.
  11. The stove fan is dismantled, as well as the mounting brackets for its housing.
  12. The mounting screws are removed from the protective casings of the air filter and fan.
  13. It is necessary to remove the front heater blower housing and the cabin filter housing.
  14. The rear part of the fan shroud is removed.
  15. The steam outlet line and the antifreeze supply hose must be disconnected, having first loosened their fastenings.
  16. The heater core can now be removed.

Before installing a new radiator, it is necessary to clean its seat in the stove body. When assembling the heater in reverse order, it is very important to control the tightness of all connections and the correct location of the parts. Otherwise, the heater may simply not function, and then the entire described sequence of work will have to be done again.

How to independently remove and replace the stove on a VAZ-2115

Heater malfunctions in any car cause a lot of trouble. It is especially difficult to correct the situation when the problem has already started and coolant has leaked.

Replacing a heater on a car is not an easy task, since in order to get to it, you will have to disassemble half the car and it will take a lot of time. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to remove and replace the stove on a VAZ-2115, and therefore they turn to a car service center.

But you shouldn’t rush to give your car into the wrong hands because of this procedure alone, because:

  1. Work to replace components costs about 1500–2000 rubles.
  2. It’s not a fact that they will do everything efficiently.
  3. Very often, car service workers treat their work anyhow and can break something when dismantling the panel.

The device of the VAZ-2115 stove

The VAZ-2115 and VAZ-2114 have the same heating systems; using the diagram below you can clearly see its structure.

How to diagnose the performance of the VAZ-2115 heater

  • Turn on switch 1 first, then second and third speeds.
  • Using levers 2 and 4, you can adjust the desired direction of the air flow, and the latter also makes it possible to select the desired temperature.

  • A faulty fan means the stove does not work at all.
  • If the radiator still shows signs of life, then the breakdown may be a failure of the additional resistor or the interior heater does not respond to switch commands.
  • But the stove tap can also leak or become stuck, in which case it must be urgently replaced.
  • When the fan is running at full power and the temperature is at maximum, and the engine is warm, then perhaps the heater radiator is clogged. To clean or replace it, you will need to disassemble it.

Replacing the radiator of the VAZ-2115 stove

Replacement is necessary when the heater radiator leaks or is clogged. If the radiator is clogged, you can blow it out with a Karcher, but keep in mind that it can deteriorate under high pressure.

How to disassemble the stove and remove the radiator

In order to remove the radiator, you must first drain the coolant and disassemble the dashboard. If the coolant is still good, it can be refilled again after replacing the failed elements.

To save time, you don’t have to remove the panel completely, but just do partial disassembly.

  • Initially, you will need to remove the console and glove compartment. To do this, unscrew the panel fasteners on the left side. Then pull the panel towards you and remove the radiator, but, most likely, you won’t be able to do this alone and you will need to turn to someone for help, since it’s more convenient to work together.
  • Unscrew the panel fastenings on both sides and loosen the brackets coming from the floor (where the ECU is located), and also remove the glove compartment completely. Bend the panel and, with the help of an assistant, remove the radiator.

When you get to the heater core, disconnect the wiring harness from the heater motor. After which you will need to unscrew two fastening nuts on the right side and two nuts on the left. After this, loosen the clamps that hold the pipes and disconnect the radiator.

How to install a new stove radiator

Installation is carried out strictly in reverse order. It is also important, after a long service life, to simultaneously replace the clamps and pipes with new ones, preferably reinforced ones. Replacing hoses for VAZ-2115 stoves is also a very lengthy and painstaking procedure, since you will have to change all the elements, otherwise there will be little benefit from a partial replacement.

Old hoses will fail over time and coolant may begin to leak.

The final assembly step is to install the dashboard and add coolant.

When all replacement steps have been completed, start the engine and check how the heating works, whether it heats up well and quickly. If there is no heat for a long time, then the air lock may not have been completely removed.

Changing the faucet

A leaking faucet is considered one of the most annoying problems with a heating system. If the problem is not detected in time, it may simply flood the car interior with coolant. To diagnose a leak, it is enough to have a flashlight with you and visually inspect the condition of the faucet. But leaks can also be caused by cracks in the pipes or radiator.

Faucet replacement procedure

It is better to carry out replacement in a special repair pit:

  1. Drain the coolant.
  2. Get to the pipes that connect the engine and the heater valve. Loosen the pipe clamps and clean the threads of the 2 studs that secure the faucet. To do this you will need a metal brush and WD-40.
  3. Disconnect all the pipes one by one. In this case, coolant may leak.
  4. After that, in the cabin you will need to remove the side trim of the torpedo and, if necessary, replace the pipes.
  5. Then you will have to go back under the car and use a 10mm socket to unscrew the nuts securing the faucet.
  6. Return to the cabin again and pull the faucet towards you, then remove the spring clamp and disconnect the faucet from the control cable.
  7. Then, when the tap is unscrewed, you can replace it with a new one. Then put everything back together in reverse order.

Replacing the VAZ-2112 heater radiator (new model)

The procedure begins with dismantling the stove, which is attached to the car body with two nuts on the side of the intake manifold, a screw in the windshield area and a nut near the cabin filter. It is also necessary to remove the rear window washer barrel.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Remove the air filter.
  2. Unscrew the screws from the outside of the stove.
  3. The heater body, consisting of two halves (left and right), must be separated and the steam exhaust hose released.
  4. Remove the old radiator, clean its seat, and then install the new element.
  5. The right half of the heater should be disassembled, which also consists of two elements fastened with metal brackets. Now the stove damper is freely accessible, and if necessary, it can be cleaned or replaced.
  6. The new heater damper must be in a position where the heater radiator is closed.
  7. The temperature sensor is set to the minimum mode, after which the ignition is turned on. This is necessary in order to correctly install this sensor, since after this it must take its initial position.
  8. You can reassemble the heater in reverse order.

After replacing the heater radiator, you will need to replenish the coolant level in the system and test the performance of the heater. If everything is done correctly, all heater elements are in working order, and cold air begins to blow from the deflectors in the cabin, which means that the system has become airy. After eliminating it, the stove will work as before, and maybe even better.

When and what kind of heater radiator was installed on the VAZ-2110

  • Until mid-2003, the entire tenth VAZ family was equipped with DAAZ aluminum radiators with catalog number 2110-8101050.
  • After 2003, radiators of an improved design began to be installed on the 2110. Its article number is 2110-81010160-00.

The price of a native DAAZ radiator should not exceed a thousand rubles. Radiators will sell for about the same money:

  • Luzar;
  • Kraft;
  • Pramo LRZ;
  • Bautler;
  • Finord and a number of other manufacturers.

These are all aluminum heat exchangers, so their prices are not too high.

Aluminum or copper?

A copper radiator will cost more, but it's worth it.

A good copper radiator will cost approximately twice as much, but it is worth it : firstly, the heat transfer of copper is higher, secondly, a copper radiator has high thermal inertia (it takes a long time to heat up, but cools down slowly), thirdly, in case of damage, a copper radiator you can easily restore, clean, replace damaged elements and it will be much cheaper than replacing the entire stove radiator with a new one.

And copper is practically not subject to corrosion , if we talk about the life of the car. If we have made a choice, we assemble the tool, diagnose the heating system and replace the radiator on the VAZ-2110.

How malfunctions manifest themselves

The automatic temperature maintenance system used on the VAZ-2110 is more convenient in terms of control, since the automatic control system does everything independently, but is less reliable than a mechanical cable drive. Moreover, problems are caused by the electronic and electrical components of the stove - the controller, temperature sensor and micromotor gearbox, the central damper, which regulates the air supply to the cabin from the outside.

Problems with the operation of the VAZ-2110 heater related to the damper:

  • lack of temperature control (only hot or cold air comes from the stove) regardless of the position of the handle on the controller;
  • insufficient air heating (even when setting the handle to the maximum temperature);
  • squeaks, knocks and extraneous noises after setting the temperature.

The cause of such problems is the central damper of the VAZ-2110 stove, which is adjusted by the controller through a gearbox. The design of the stove includes another damper - air distribution into zones. It is controlled using a handle mounted on the central air supply deflector into the cabin, so malfunctions with this part are rare.

Required Tools

Replacing a VAZ-2110 stove will require:

  • new complete radiator with factory fasteners;
  • pliers;
  • container for used coolant;
  • socket wrench 8 by 10;
  • tweezers for fixing latches;
  • Phillips screwdriver.

It is also recommended to stock up on clamps, because in the factory kit there are not enough of them to securely fix the pipes.

Let's sum it up

To replace the heater radiator with your own hands, it will take time:

  • Disassemble the VAZ 2110 heater - 2.5 hours.
  • to install the heater in reverse order .

Because It takes a lot of time to dismantle the engine shield, so along with replacing the heater radiator, it is recommended to perform other operations that also require disassembling the heater. (for example, to simplify the replacement of the air filter, to make sound insulation)

After we have assembled the heater and added antifreeze, we check the operation of the stove. If the heater radiator pipes do not heat up, then the possible reason is an air lock in the engine cooling system . How to remove air from the SOD is described in the article on repairing the VAZ 2110 heater.
