How to change the radiator of the VAZ-21124 heating system on old and new stoves


Interior heating systems on different vehicles have a similar design. In a VAZ-21124 car, the heater functions as follows:
  • the stove control unit controls the set air heating temperature with an acceptable error of about 2 degrees;
  • Air heating for interior heating is carried out in the heater radiator. It has a standard design and is made of copper or aluminum alloys;
  • To supply air into the cabin, special deflectors are provided that regulate the direction of its flow;
  • On the heater control panel there are: a fan operating mode switch with sliders that control the heater dampers.

One of the most common problems with the heating system on the VAZ-2112 is its depressurization, which is characterized by leakage of coolant from under the central panel. One of the reasons for this is the failure of the radiator, in which case it needs to be replaced.

Aluminum VS Copper: which radiator to choose?

Many years of experience in operating radiators made of various materials on domestic cars (including the VAZ-2112), it was noticed that its performance is not affected by the material from which it is made. Both copper and aluminum devices heat equally well.

The only criterion when choosing a radiator is its originality, since only a serious manufacturer is capable of producing a quality product. Therefore, when purchasing a heater radiator, it is necessary to pay attention to this criterion.

So, where exactly is the radiator of the VAZ-2112 stove? In the design of the interior heating system, the radiator is located inside the heater housing, occupying a horizontal position in relation to the central panel.

On a VAZ 2112, replacing the heater radiator has its own small peculiarity: the heating and ventilation system of the interior of the “tenth” family is fundamentally different in operating principle from similar systems of previous generations (of the “nine” and “classic” families).

  • The heater radiator is always included in the engine cooling system cycle, that is, it is in a hot state;
  • Electronic control of heater dampers. For this purpose, a controller is mounted on the console, which has handles with which the required temperature in the car interior, fan operating modes and the desired direction of airflow are set.

So, replacing the heater on a VAZ 2112 begins with finding the reason for the unsatisfactory operation of the heating system . First, let's check.

Sensor responsible for the temperature in the cabin

The sensor works normally when the damper opens/closes with the controller handle in the extreme positions (red and blue points on the temperature scale, respectively). The flap can be observed with the front deflectors removed. In addition, the electrical resistance of the sensor itself is also checked: at 22 degrees it should be 22 Ohms, at 16 – 25 Ohms. Of course, before checking, the sensor must be removed (see photo).

Controller

This device is already checked for the presence of voltage at the ends of the temperature switch. To do this, we remove the controller housing from the socket and, by turning the switch knob, take readings from the corresponding wires, which, as a rule, are painted brown and pink.

When you switch the handle, the voltage should appear and drop after 10-15 seconds. If this does not happen, the controller is most likely faulty and must be replaced.

In this case, the check becomes somewhat more complicated, since you will have to work directly in the engine compartment, and there:

  • Unscrew the sound insulation;
  • Nuts and screws securing the frill (don’t even try to remove them completely, and there’s no need);
  • We dismantle the electric wiper drives;
  • We move the frill and find two connectors, one of which connects the above-described pink and brown wires that provide power to the gearmotor drive.

First, we make sure that the wiring is intact, for which we disconnect the connector and use a voltmeter to record the voltage coming to it. Then we apply on-board voltage (from the battery) to the controller contacts and observe its operation: if it does not spin, replace it, although there may be simple oxidation on the connector contacts.

Of course, if he works in all four positions, then there can be no complaints against him. Well, if the “low speed” operating mode does not turn on, then the additional resistance, which is located on the body of the electric motor itself, which can only be reached from the engine compartment, may have failed. Replacing the heater fan on a VAZ 2112 occurs only when you are convinced that the switch itself and the 20-amp fuse (F7) and relay (K6) located in the mounting block are in good working order, and the collector brushes of the fan motor are not stuck.


Disassembling the dashboard

Well, if the interior heater fan operates in only one mode, then the fault should be looked for in the following order:

  • Checking the controller wiring for burnt contacts (carried out using a “continuity test”);
  • Checking the reliability of the connection of the wiring contacts of the relay unit (on the right under the hood);
  • Checking the additional resistor that regulates the speed and turns on the fan when the regulator is in position “A” and “1” (located on the body of the heater itself).

Advice! Also, the reason for the appearance of unheated air from the dampers of the heating system can be an insufficient level of coolant. In this case, an air plug appears in the heater radiator housing, interfering with the normal heating of the radiator housing. When adding fluid to the required level, the air from the heater radiator eliminates itself.

How to remove and replace the heater radiator on a VAZ-2112 (old model)?

A leak of cooling fluid in the cabin is a direct prerequisite for the need to change the heating radiator, since it is already out of order.

Note that models older than 2003 have an old-style stove installed. However, towards the end of this year, the cars were already equipped with a new heater. Accordingly, they have some structural differences, and therefore are removed and installed differently.

Replacing the radiator on the VAZ-2112 stove:

  1. We free the system from antifreeze by draining it through the hole in the power unit block or through the expansion tank. If you choose the second option, you must remove the ignition module. Next, remove the lid from the tank, and then uncork the drain plug. If there is no sediment in the coolant, that is, it is in a clean state, it can be reused.
  2. It is necessary to remove the hood seal, which is located next to the frill.
  3. The screw fixing the frill should be unscrewed, and then the screws securing its upper part should be unscrewed.
  4. Loosen the clamps and remove all wires and hoses from the frill.
  5. Disconnect the vehicle's power supply by removing the terminals from the power source.
  6. On the left side of the frill there are two screws that must be unscrewed to remove the element. There is no need to remove it.
  7. Remove the front cover.
  8. You will need to remove the terminal (if any) from the liquid level control sensor in the system, as well as the steam removal hose from the expansion tank.
  9. Remove the hose from the front windshield washer.
  10. After unscrewing the four screws, you need to remove the windshield wipers with the windshield trim.
  11. The stove fan is dismantled, as well as the mounting brackets for its housing.
  12. The mounting screws are removed from the protective casings of the air filter and fan.
  13. It is necessary to remove the front heater blower housing and the cabin filter housing.
  14. The rear part of the fan shroud is removed.
  15. The steam outlet line and the antifreeze supply hose must be disconnected, having first loosened their fastenings.
  16. The heater core can now be removed.

Before installing a new radiator, it is necessary to clean its seat in the stove body. When assembling the heater in reverse order, it is very important to control the tightness of all connections and the correct location of the parts. Otherwise, the heater may simply not function, and then the entire described sequence of work will have to be done again.

Carrying out repairs

First you need to drain the antifreeze. Looking ahead, we note that if the drained liquid is clean, it can be refilled. You will also need a container to drain the coolant - at least four liters. You can drain the liquid from the engine block through a special plug or from the expansion tank. In the first case, you need to unscrew the expander cap and unscrew the drain plug located behind the ignition module. The second option, which involves draining the liquid from the expansion tank, requires first removing the hose from the stove.

Further, the options for replacing the old and new type heater radiators diverge. First, let's look at replacing the updated product that has been equipped with the VAZ 2111 since 2003.

Replacing the VAZ-2112 heater radiator (new model)

The procedure begins with dismantling the stove, which is attached to the car body with two nuts on the side of the intake manifold, a screw in the windshield area and a nut near the cabin filter. It is also necessary to remove the rear window washer barrel.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Remove the air filter.
  2. Unscrew the screws from the outside of the stove.
  3. The heater body, consisting of two halves (left and right), must be separated and the steam exhaust hose released.
  4. Remove the old radiator, clean its seat, and then install the new element.
  5. The right half of the heater should be disassembled, which also consists of two elements fastened with metal brackets. Now the stove damper is freely accessible, and if necessary, it can be cleaned or replaced.
  6. The new heater damper must be in a position where the heater radiator is closed.
  7. The temperature sensor is set to the minimum mode, after which the ignition is turned on. This is necessary in order to correctly install this sensor, since after this it must take its initial position.
  8. You can reassemble the heater in reverse order.

After replacing the heater radiator, you will need to replenish the coolant level in the system and test the performance of the heater. If everything is done correctly, all heater elements are in working order, and cold air begins to blow from the deflectors in the cabin, which means that the system has become airy. After eliminating it, the stove will work as before, and maybe even better.

VAZ 2111

The VAZ 2111 retained all the technical advantages of the “tens”, but at the same time was adapted for the transportation of goods. The car body was noticeably lengthened. It also became taller, which also increased cargo capacity. Rails are installed on the roof, which makes it possible to transport cargo weighing up to 50 kg on the top rack.

This is the first time such comfortable rear seats have been used. The rear seat can be folded in a special way and then any cargo up to two meters long can enter the interior and trunk of the VAZ 2111. In this case, the seat can also be folded across, leaving room for the passenger.

During the production of Lada 2111, several options were tried. The most worthy of more attention is the VAZ 2111-90. This is a kind of Niva hybrid. All four wheels are driven. In addition to greater capacity, this VAZ 21114 car also has high cross-country ability. The VAZ 2111 comes standard with a 1.6-liter engine. The new model uses a 1.8 liter engine!
