Extraneous sounds always indicate that some problems have arisen. Especially if the noise comes from under the hood. Drivers are especially concerned about sudden strong impacts. This is how the chain guide on a VAZ 2107 behaves when it fails.
It is dangerous to continue driving with a broken damper. This will lead to rapid wear of the guide teeth on the sprockets, which will damage the links of the chain itself. As a result, serious engine damage.
Our instructions will help you understand the structure and features of replacing this important element of the car's design.
Purpose of the sedative
The damper is designed to dampen vibrations and jerks that occur during startup on the timing chain. Without this device, the chain would easily break off the guide gears and break at the most inopportune moments.
Most often, the timing chain breaks at the moment when the crankshaft rotation speed reaches its maximum. The break occurs so quickly that the driver has no chance to react in time and turn off the engine. As a result, all engine valves fail.
After the valves, problems begin in the cylinders. It is almost impossible to restore the engine after such a breakdown. Especially when it comes to seven. After all, the cost of repair work can significantly exceed the cost of the entire car. And it’s easier to sell a car for spare parts than to restore the engine.
Therefore, we can conclude that the timing chain guide is one of those parts that needs constant monitoring. This is the most important protection of your engine from major breakdown.
What happens if you don't install a new damper on time?
Many car enthusiasts carelessly use their car even after obvious signs of engine malfunction appear - with ringing or loss of power. There are several reasons why you shouldn't follow their example:
- the engine may seize while driving;
- after a more serious breakdown, repair turns out to be impractical;
- You may be injured as sudden engine stops can be dangerous when traveling at high speeds or in heavy traffic.
If you do not keep track of the condition of the timing chain and its damper, then most often a sudden breakdown of these parts occurs. This sometimes happens when starting the engine or even while driving. After the damper falls apart, the timing chain breaks. Since this happens instantly, the driver does not have time to react. Therefore, valves subsequently fail, and then cylinders. The pistons will not be restored. In such a situation, the car can only be restored by replacing the engine, but for the VAZ-2107 model, repairs are not always advisable. The overwhelming majority of car owners sell their vehicles after such a breakdown for spare parts.
Mechanism design
This is a simple plate made of high quality carbon steel. It has two mounting holes.
There is also a second design element. It is called the hydraulic tensioner shoe. It is located under the timing cover. To extend service life, the side exposed to increased mechanical stress is coated with durable polymer material.
To replace the chain guide on a VAZ, you need to remove the cover and loosen the tension roller.
Installing the chain by marks
If repair work has been carried out on the timing drive or the chain is highly stretched, such that the marks on the camshaft gear and crankshaft pulley do not match the corresponding marks on the bearing housing and engine block, an adjustment must be made and the chain installed correctly.
Tools you will need:
- Screwdriver Set;
- key for rotating the crankshaft;
- a set of keys.
To install the chain, follow these steps:
- Remove the cover, filter and its housing.
- We disconnect the crankcase exhaust pipe from the carburetor, and also loosen the fasteners of the choke cable to remove the cable.

Operating principle of the chain damper
When you start the engine, you force the crankshaft and timing shaft to move. Ideally they should work synchronously. But it doesn't always happen this way. The teeth on the guide gears sometimes break, and the chain stretches and begins to sag.
This leads to the fact that the timing shaft begins to move a few moments after the crankshaft. The chain stretches even more and can easily come off the gear.
That is why cars are equipped with a so-called calming system, which consists of two parts.
This is what a sedative looks like
The shoe is connected to an oil line containing an oil pressure sensor. If the chain slack reaches a high value, the lubricant pressure drops sharply. This results in an additional volume of oil being pumped in, which allows for additional pressure to be created.
The shoe moves and transmits pressure, bringing the tension state into order. All this happens instantly, which protects against circuit breaks.
But due to a sharp blow to the shoe, it begins to vibrate strongly. The vibrations are transmitted to the opposite side, where there is a damper designed to dampen them.

VAZ 2101-2107 – Engine repair
Dear site visitors! We invite you to familiarize yourself with the prices for repairs of VAZ engines at the MAXIMOTORS car service center, installed on VAZ 2101-2107. Car service hours are daily from 9 to 21 hours.
Signs of a malfunctioning damper
The driver can judge the breakdown by two characteristic signals:
- Strong knocks and grinding noises that are heard under the timing cover. Unpleasant sounds occur when the engine starts, especially if it is cooled.
- The motor loses momentum. This is especially noticeable until it warms up. A non-working part is not able to dampen vibrations, which leads to desynchronization in the operation of the cylinders. The engine behaves inappropriately, does not respond to the gas pedal, and failures occur.
How to recognize a malfunction at an early stage
The first signs of problems in the timing block are:
- Grinding and knocking during operation of the power unit. These sounds are clearly audible when the engine is cold started, and they also become more pronounced when the chain sag.
- Loss of engine power. This sign is also more noticeable immediately after the movement begins. Due to the fact that the vibrations of the chain are not completely damped by the damper, the rotation phases of the timing belt and camshafts do not coincide. The cylinders subsequently also work asynchronously. When you press the accelerator pedal, the engine does not operate normally.
As soon as you hear ringing and knocking in the gas distribution block, you should take the car to a service center for diagnostics. Do not expect a complete failure to work on the part of the power unit.
Why does it fail
The stabilizer on the VAZ 2107 faces serious loads throughout the entire engine operating cycle. No wonder it sometimes breaks down. There may be two reasons for this:
- Loosening the mounting bolts. Shocks continuously strike these bolts, causing them to become loose. Gradually becoming loose, the fastening element can easily break.
- Metal destruction. The mechanism is constantly running under voltage. Continuous impacts over time lead to the appearance of microcracks that are invisible to the naked eye. Gradually some of them are increasing. There comes a time when a spare part unexpectedly breaks down.
Types of chain drive
The VAZ “Seven”, like other “classics”, is equipped with a double-row timing chain. However, there is a single-row chain that, if desired, can be installed on a Zhiguli.
Single row chain
A chain drive with one row has less noise when the engine is running compared to two rows. This factor is one of the main factors in favor of choosing single-row chains. Therefore, some VAZ 2107 owners decide to replace the timing drive. The lower noise level is due to the fact that fewer links are driven. Plus, it is easier for the entire engine to rotate such a chain, which has a positive effect on the increase in power. However, due to the low noise level when such a chain is stretched, it is not always clear that the part needs tension.
Double row chain
Despite the advantages of a single-row chain, a chain drive with two rows is the most common, since it is characterized by high reliability and if a link breaks, the entire chain does not break. In addition, the load on the timing drive parts is distributed evenly, as a result of which the chain and gears wear out more slowly. The life of the part in question exceeds 100 thousand km. Although recently, in order to reduce the weight of power units, automakers have been installing chains with one row.
Replacing a double-row chain with a single-row one
If you are thinking about replacing a double-row chain drive with a single-row one, you will need to purchase the following parts:
- crankshaft, camshaft and oil pump gears for single row chain;
- sedative;
- shoe;
- single-row chain;
- automatic tensioner.
All of the listed parts are taken, as a rule, from the VAZ 21214. Replacing the chain should not cause difficulties. The only thing that is required is to replace the sprockets, for which you unscrew the corresponding fasteners. Otherwise, the steps are similar to the procedure for replacing a conventional double-row chain.
How to replace a dampener
To work you will need:
- new part (cost approximately 500 rubles);
- 20 centimeters of one and a half millimeter steel wire;
- open-end and socket wrenches;
- flat screwdriver.
- Remove the air filter.
- Using a 13mm socket wrench, unscrew the mounting bolts on the cover. Remove the cover.
- Loosen the cap nut that secures the chain tensioner.
- Using a screwdriver, carefully press out the shoe and hold it in this position.
- Tighten the loose cap nut.
- Insert the wire hook into the eye of the damper.
- Unscrew the mounting bolts, holding the device itself with a hook so as not to drop it into the motor.
- After the mounting bolts have been removed, use a spanner to turn the timing shaft a third of a turn. This will release the chain tension.
- Using a steel hook, carefully remove the damper.
- Put a new one in its place.
- Follow steps 1 to 9 in reverse order.
So in a short time you can easily replace the damper in your garage, saving about 700 rubles. Usually this amount is asked to the service station for similar work.
Dampener VAZ 2106: do-it-yourself replacement
In the article you will learn about the VAZ 2106 damper and the method of replacing it. The service life of this device is quite long, but sooner or later it needs to be changed - otherwise the gas distribution mechanism will not work properly. The entire replacement procedure happens quickly - it will take you longer to prepare. And to do this you will need to remove the air filter cover, the block head, and move the choke and throttle cables to the side.
A few words about the VAZ 2106 damper
The price of this device ranges from 100 to 350 rubles, you are unlikely to find more expensive. It is worth noting that this element is suitable for all VAZ models of the “classic” series - 2101-2107. Replacement of the damper occurs in two cases:
- If there is a knocking noise from the timing chain.
- If the chain has jumped over a tooth or has strong vibrations.
To carry out the work you will need a small set of tools and accessories:
- Open-end and spanner wrenches.
- Stabilizer VAZ 2106.
- Flat screwdrivers.
- Rigid wire is a small piece bent into a hook. Next we will talk about why you need it.
Replacing the timing chain
The owners of the VAZ-2107 became the heirs of the Soviet school of automotive engineering. It was believed that a significant part of the repair work should be within the capabilities of the vehicle owner. The Zhiguli engine of the 7th model has almost no components and assemblies that require adjustment using special equipment, for example, computer diagnostic systems. A driver who has the skills to use hand tools can easily replace the timing belt on his own. There are two ways to perform this operation.
Chain care
Regular cleaning and lubrication is the best way to extend the life of your chain. Use a special lubricant designed for bicycle chains. Lubricate each roller. Lubricate the chain only from the inside; there should be no lubricant on the outside.
This depends mainly on the number and size of freewheel sprockets and the size of the plates. You can also add the brand and type of switches. A good indicator is. Place the chain on the smallest tray on the smallest sprocket of the freewheel you are using. This is usually the fourth largest. It should then extend approximately 2cm from the top derailleur roller. Place the chain on the large tray and on the largest freewheel sprocket, then use.
Typically the fourth of the smallest, the two derailleur wheels should be aligned along an axis perpendicular to the ground. One or two links can always be added or subtracted depending on the gear configuration and in particular in the case where the housing contains large 28 or 30 tooth gears.
Do not turn the chain in the opposite direction and apply lubricant in a hurry. In addition to increased consumption of the product, the links can be overloaded. Always remove excess grease with a rag. After riding in wet weather, wipe the chain dry and reapply lubricant. This will prevent rust and chain stretching.
