How to replace a chain guide on a VAZ 2107 with your own hands

Extraneous sounds always indicate that some problems have arisen. Especially if the noise comes from under the hood. Drivers are especially concerned about sudden strong impacts. This is how the chain guide on a VAZ 2107 behaves when it fails.

It is dangerous to continue driving with a broken damper. This will lead to rapid wear of the guide teeth on the sprockets, which will damage the links of the chain itself. As a result, serious engine damage.

Our instructions will help you understand the structure and features of replacing this important element of the car's design.

Purpose of the sedative

The damper is designed to dampen vibrations and jerks that occur during startup on the timing chain. Without this device, the chain would easily break off the guide gears and break at the most inopportune moments.

Most often, the timing chain breaks at the moment when the crankshaft rotation speed reaches its maximum. The break occurs so quickly that the driver has no chance to react in time and turn off the engine. As a result, all engine valves fail.

After the valves, problems begin in the cylinders. It is almost impossible to restore the engine after such a breakdown. Especially when it comes to seven. After all, the cost of repair work can significantly exceed the cost of the entire car. And it’s easier to sell a car for spare parts than to restore the engine.

Therefore, we can conclude that the timing chain guide is one of those parts that needs constant monitoring. This is the most important protection of your engine from major breakdown.

Mechanism design

This is a simple plate made of high quality carbon steel. It has two mounting holes.

There is also a second design element. It is called the hydraulic tensioner shoe. It is located under the timing cover. To extend service life, the side exposed to increased mechanical stress is coated with durable polymer material.

To replace the chain guide on a VAZ, you need to remove the cover and loosen the tension roller.

Operating principle of the chain damper

When you start the engine, you force the crankshaft and timing shaft to move. Ideally they should work synchronously. But it doesn't always happen this way. The teeth on the guide gears sometimes break, and the chain stretches and begins to sag.

This leads to the fact that the timing shaft begins to move a few moments after the crankshaft. The chain stretches even more and can easily come off the gear.

That is why cars are equipped with a so-called calming system, which consists of two parts.

This is what a sedative looks like

The shoe is connected to an oil line containing an oil pressure sensor. If the chain slack reaches a high value, the lubricant pressure drops sharply. This results in an additional volume of oil being pumped in, which allows for additional pressure to be created.

The shoe moves and transmits pressure, bringing the tension state into order. All this happens instantly, which protects against circuit breaks.

But due to a sharp blow to the shoe, it begins to vibrate strongly. The vibrations are transmitted to the opposite side, where there is a damper designed to dampen them.

Replacing the chain guide of a VAZ 2106 car

Wear of a car engine is usually a gradual process, and up to a certain mileage it is practically unnoticeable. However, as the service life of parts decreases, wear begins to progress, and various types of malfunctions appear in the engine.

Signs of a broken chain guide

The need to replace the chain guide of a VAZ 2106 automobile engine appears if the following signs of its malfunction occur:

  • in the engine compartment of the car, from the side of the intermediate shaft cover, a characteristic noise appears or a ringing knock of the chain on the cylinder head cover;
  • In the operation of the power unit, disturbances and malfunctions occur caused by the chain slipping on the teeth of the camshaft drive sprockets. Such a malfunction disrupts normal operation due to a change in the operating mode of the gas distribution mechanism;
  • engine operation is impossible due to serious reasons caused by the chain slipping on the sprockets, a broken chain, and, as a result, engine jamming.

Most often, the breakage of the damper occurs due to untimely engine maintenance, which consists of tightening the camshaft drive chain. A chain that is not properly tensioned most often leads to malfunctions. The VAZ 2106 engine chain damper is located on the side opposite the tensioner shoe. It is attached to the engine with two M6 bolts of different lengths. To do this, nuts with M6 threads are welded to its body. Sometimes the nuts break off due to the occurrence of a large resonance of circuit oscillations, and further operation of the engine is not possible. When the VAZ 2106 chain guide is heavily worn, a loud noise usually occurs. In this case, there is also a need for work to replace it.

When choosing and purchasing a new part, you should pay attention to its number marked on the VAZ 2106 chain guide. Its price is low and installing this unit from other brands of cars is neither possible nor advisable.

Tools and materials needed for replacement:

  • a set of open-end wrenches and socket heads;
  • Screwdriver Set;
  • wire hook or long tweezers;
  • new pacifier;
  • automotive sealant;
  • cylinder head cover gasket (if necessary).

Work on replacing the VAZ 2106 chain guide should be carried out in a well-lit place. The best thing, of course, is a clean and bright garage.

Replacing the chain guide in a VAZ 2106 car

The part is removed in the following sequence:

  1. Remove the air filter housing.
  2. We remove the carburetor (you must first cover the diffuser wells with a clean, dry rag).
  3. Unscrew the eight bolts of the cylinder head cover and remove it.
  4. After this, we turn the camshaft sprocket until its mark coincides with the boss on the camshaft housing, which acts as a mark.
  5. Unscrew the chain tensioner nut (not all the way, you just need to loosen it).
  6. Using a long screwdriver, press the tensioner shoe, thus loosening the chain.
  7. Tighten the tensioner cap nut while continuing to hold the screwdriver.
  8. We hook the chain guide with a wire hook to the technological hole on its body.
  9. We unscrew the screws securing our part.
  10. Remove the tensioner from the engine by pulling it out with a hook.

If there is a complete break, the VAZ 2106 chain guide, the price of which is 200-450 rubles, often falls down. In this case, it is pulled out with a long wire hook or tweezers. If such removal is not possible, it is necessary to remove the engine sump.

Before installing the element, you need to make sure that the markings of the old and new parts match. Work on installing the damper is carried out in the following order:

  1. In the reverse order of removal, install the new part in place of the old one.
  2. We adjust the tension of the camshaft drive chain. To do this, loosen the cap nut used in its design. At the same time, we observe the degree of movement of his shoe. If the shoe is motionless, do not hit the nut very hard with a hammer. Thus, we release the plunger of this unit. Next, turn the engine crankshaft (clockwise) until resistance to turning appears on its side (1-2 full turns are enough). Tighten the chain tensioner nut.
  3. We check the coincidence of the marks located on the camshaft sprocket and on the VAZ 2106 engine pulley.
  4. Install the cylinder head cover. Before installation, inspect and change the cover gasket if necessary.
  5. Next, we attach the carburetor (be sure to observe the tightening torques of the fastening nuts to avoid deformation of its middle part).
  6. Install the air filter.

When installing a damper on a car, remember that the mounting bolts have different lengths. Therefore, it is important to ensure that they are installed correctly. And finally, a useful tip: before tightening, lubricate the seats for these bolts on the cylinder head with automotive sealant. This will prevent engine oil from leaking from underneath them in the future.

Signs of a malfunctioning damper

The driver can judge the breakdown by two characteristic signals:

  1. Strong knocks and grinding noises that are heard under the timing cover. Unpleasant sounds occur when the engine starts, especially if it is cooled.
  2. The motor loses momentum. This is especially noticeable until it warms up. A non-working part is not able to dampen vibrations, which leads to desynchronization in the operation of the cylinders. The engine behaves inappropriately, does not respond to the gas pedal, and failures occur.

Preparation for adjustment, tools

Before starting work, it is better to place the car on a flat surface and put it on the handbrake. The gearbox knob is placed in neutral position.

You will need a number of tools, namely:

  • socket wrench 10;
  • carob at 38;
  • carob at 13.

If the listed keys are available, you can proceed directly to tensioning the chain.

For a carburetor (performed if it is necessary to determine the integrity of the damper): remove the air filter housing from the carburetor and disconnect the “gas” draft from the roller;

Disconnect the traction lever;

Disconnect the bracket hose;

For injection (performed if necessary): remove the throttle cable and breather hose.

Using a 10 mm tubular wrench, remove the cover from the cylinder block;

Why does it fail

The stabilizer on the VAZ 2107 faces serious loads throughout the entire engine operating cycle. No wonder it sometimes breaks down. There may be two reasons for this:

  1. Loosening the mounting bolts. Shocks continuously strike these bolts, causing them to become loose. Gradually becoming loose, the fastening element can easily break.

  2. Metal destruction. The mechanism is constantly running under voltage. Continuous impacts over time lead to the appearance of microcracks that are invisible to the naked eye. Gradually some of them are increasing. There comes a time when a spare part unexpectedly breaks down.

How to replace a dampener

To work you will need:

  • new part (cost approximately 500 rubles);
  • 20 centimeters of one and a half millimeter steel wire;
  • open-end and socket wrenches;
  • flat screwdriver.
  1. Remove the air filter.

  2. Using a 13mm socket wrench, unscrew the mounting bolts on the cover. Remove the cover.
  3. Loosen the cap nut that secures the chain tensioner.

  4. Using a screwdriver, carefully press out the shoe and hold it in this position.

  5. Tighten the loose cap nut.
  6. Insert the wire hook into the eye of the damper.

  7. Unscrew the mounting bolts, holding the device itself with a hook so as not to drop it into the motor.

  8. After the mounting bolts have been removed, use a spanner to turn the timing shaft a third of a turn. This will release the chain tension.
  9. Using a steel hook, carefully remove the damper.

  10. Put a new one in its place.
  11. Follow steps 1 to 9 in reverse order.

So in a short time you can easily replace the damper in your garage, saving about 700 rubles. Usually this amount is asked to the service station for similar work.

Dismantling the VAZ 2107 chain guide

  • Turn on neutral speed.
  • Remove the engine head cover (it is held on by 8 bolts). This should be done carefully, being careful not to damage the gasket - if it is in good condition, it can be reused.

  • Adjust the position of the camshaft sprocket so that the mark on it coincides with the boss on its body.
  • Loosen the timing chain tensioner nut (just loosen, there is no need to unscrew completely).
  • Using a screwdriver, press down the tensioner shoe, thereby releasing the chain tension.
  • While holding the screwdriver, tighten the tensioner cap nut, thereby securing it in the position when the chain is released.
  • Hook the tensioner with a hook, threading it through the technological hole. This will prevent the damper from falling into the engine pan after the mounting nuts are unscrewed. Instead of a hook, long tweezers or a magnetic telescopic handle will do.
  • Unscrew the two bolts securing the VAZ 2107 damper and pull it out.

Important: if the damper breaks, you can try to remove it with the same hook, tweezers, or magnet. If it falls and it is impossible to get it out, you will have to remove the oil pan and take out the damper from below.
