I’ll share my version of an acoustic shelf and my experience of placing a subwoofer for a 22-year-old Camry...

When the question arose - to make a shelf (since I simply didn’t have my own, like most of the interior when I bought the car), I started thinking - where to place the sub? There were two subwoofers in stock and both were cabinet ones, but I really didn’t want to spoil the bounty of the trunk of my Kamryukha with this large wooden chest... And the quality of the subwoofer in the sedan - riding in the trunk - did not impress me at all (from experience in the driving cars)

I decided to pull the sub out of its nest and install it in the rear parcel shelf. In this version, it will play on the volume of the trunk, since I have not yet begun to assemble the body to the shelf. I noticed that on many Korean cars the sub is installed this way! I’ll try this option for now - if it doesn’t suit me, I’ll strain all my Kulibin brains and make a box. I didn’t make the box, not so much out of laziness, but because of space. The width - which the rear parcel shelf allowed to be cut - will force the box to be of the required volume, quite narrow, and therefore - almost or even to the very bottom of the luggage compartment - and I really wouldn’t want this.

Why didn’t you place the sub in the trunk in the fender well? Yes, firstly: he will start playing in the trunk, and not in the cabin, and therefore he cannot avoid what he so wanted to avoid; and secondly: the width of the trunk allows me to carry a snowboard across it, and for me this is extremely valuable, since I drive it three to four times a week.

In general, not finding other options, I settled on making a shelf out of plywood, which would kill two birds with one stone - the first, of course, is installing the sound, the second, I’ll make a shelf, since I simply don’t have one.

To make a shelf for a VAZ 2109, you will need to prepare.

Materials

• Plywood or MDF.
• Macroflex.
• Glue (one can is enough).
• Several meters of carpet.

• Tape measure or simple ruler.

Note. As mentioned above, the ready-made standard shelf of the VAZ 2109 is used as a model. Therefore, it will need to be removed. A simple screwdriver, a little patience and time - the shelf is dismantled.

• We place this very shelf, cleaned of dirt and dust, on a flat table.
• We lay a sheet of chipboard on top.
• Take a pencil and carefully trace the edges intended for the seat belts.
• Draw ovals for the speakers with a pencil.

How to mark an acoustic shelf

• We also make the base of the podiums from chipboard.
• We work with a jigsaw.
• To give the structure additional rigidity, you need supports made of bars measuring 20x40 mm. There should be several pieces of bars and they are inserted between the ovals using screws.

Note. The podiums, as mentioned above, are made on a separate piece of chipboard.

• We place the podiums on a standard shelf and trace them with a pencil.
• We also mark with a pencil the places of the round holes intended for air intake from the trunk.
• Between the bars of the podium, voids appear that need to be filled with sealant. As for the holes inside the product itself, they are covered with cardboard. This will prevent the foam from falling out during the drying process.
• Fill with polyurethane foam.

To improve the appearance of the product, it is recommended to use artificial or natural leather. High-quality casing made of sound-permeable materials will help hide the speakers from prying eyes. If you choose the size and shape of the shelf wisely, you can achieve maximum effect when playing low frequencies using budget playback equipment.

Creating a Layout

To create a layout, you can use the shape of a standard acoustic or regular Priora shelf. Taking its dimensions as a basis, calculate the required dimensions. First you need to remove the shelf from the car and attach it to a previously prepared cardboard sheet. Next, use a marker to outline the product, including the slots for the seat belts. After this, you can select any location to install the speakers and mark it on the layout.

The excess part of the cardboard is cut off with scissors or a stationery knife, and holes for the speakers are also cut out. If there are podiums for speakers on the factory shelf, then they are also removed and used to create a layout.

To work you will need the following tools:

• material of suitable size and thickness - plywood, chipboard, OSB, MDF;
• jigsaw;
• wooden bars;
• self-tapping screws of different lengths;
• sealant;
• fine-grained sandpaper;
• epoxy resin based adhesive;
• stationery knife;
• sound-absorbing material for finishing.

First, you need to attach the cardboard model to the material that will be used for the future acoustic shelf, and trace all the lines with a marker. For manufacturing, it is advisable to use composite materials made of thick wood. Usually this is a panel up to 25 mm thick, for the manufacture of which a plywood sheet or MDF panel is used.

Making a shelf for a sedan

The creation process includes the following steps:

1. The shape of the product is cut out with a jigsaw, and all unnecessary parts are cut off.
2. Several wooden blocks should be attached between the holes for installing the speakers, using sealant and self-tapping screws. The bars will act as stiffening ribs, preventing rattling when playing music at high volume.

Podium templates are cut out on a separate piece of material using a jigsaw. They are fixed to the workpiece using mounting foam. After the sealant has completely hardened, excess pieces should be cut off with a stationery knife. Slots are cut for seat belts.

The workpiece is processed on all sides with fine-grained sandpaper until the surface is smooth, after which all seams are sealed with sealant. The shelf is covered with finishing material - you can use adhesive bases based on epoxy resins for this.

Now all that remains is to install the structure in its original place. To secure it, it is better to use strong bolts that will not loosen over time.

The same materials are used for manufacturing and the algorithm of actions is also almost identical. The difference is that the standard shelf without sidewalls in cars with these body types consists of two parts. One of them reclines for easy loading of luggage.

• Carpet is best glued to chipboard or plywood using an aerosol compound.
• The carpet will adhere firmly if the layer of glue is thin and evenly laid on the surface.

So let's get started:

• We apply glue to the shelf (you can use not only an aerosol composition, but also Armenian glue Nairit, which also holds very well).

Note. Nairit holds firmly, but takes a long time to dry. It is recommended not to lay the carpet right away, but to wait until the glue dries a little and its adhesive functions increase.

• Now you can lay the carpet and smooth the material from the center to the edges. This is done so that irregularities, if they appear, are removed to the edges.

Advice. It is recommended to work with gloves. This will make your work easier and your hands will remain clean. In addition, if you do not have the skill to do this kind of work, it is recommended to pull the shelf in parts: first one half, then the next.

• We leave it to dry for a certain time (usually a day). To prevent the material from suddenly peeling off in some places during the drying process, some kind of weight is placed on top. This could be a bag of sand or just bricks.

That's all. If the instructions are complicated and doubts arise, then it is better to entrust the work to specialists. On the other hand, you can learn everything with your own hands, so it’s worth the risk. During the work process, it is highly recommended to watch the video and study photo materials. Thus, the price for purchasing and installing an acoustic shelf in a VAZ 2109 will be significantly reduced, because you will only need to spend money on consumables.

Making a shelf

The standard shelf of the Priora Sedan can be used to make it easier to make a similar model with your own hands. It can be used as a layout. But to make the work easier, it is better to additionally make a layout from cardboard.

To do this, remove the standard shelf. Then you need to take a sheet of thick cardboard or thin plywood and use a marker to transfer the dimensions of the standard shelf. Using a utility knife, cut out the layout. You should also use a marker to circle the places that are intended for seat belts. We should not forget about places for speakers (see How to choose speakers for a car radio on your own). Then everything happens as follows:

• Transfer the outline of the layout onto a sheet of plywood;
• Using an electric jigsaw, cut out the base for the future shelf;
• To increase the rigidity of the structure, it is necessary to strengthen it with supports made of wooden blocks, which are fixed using self-tapping screws. There is usually little space left between them, which is not recommended. To eliminate this problem, you should use a sealant;

Note: they are installed between the ovals for the speakers, it is recommended to use at least 2-3 bars.

• Take another piece of chipboard, which is necessary for cutting out the acoustic podiums. The models will be podiums taken from the standard device. They should be placed on the base and outlined with a pencil;
• It is also necessary to mark with a pencil the places through which air will flow;

Note: during the work, extra holes may appear that need to be sealed with cardboard so that the mounting foam does not get inside the product itself.

• Seal the podiums with polyurethane foam. Wait until everything is dry;
• Take a sharp knife, with which you should remove all excess;
• To level the surface, it must be treated with fine sandpaper;
• Find old nylon tights and soak them with epoxy glue. The resulting material should be wrapped around the entire construction of polyurethane foam;
• The box for seat belts must be made in such a way that they enter it from the side;

• Start assembling the structure. For this, it is also advisable to use metal screws, with the help of which the strength of the entire structure will be increased;
• Install the created shelf on the sedan, securing it with bolts.

Finalization of the standard model

There is no need to make a new shelf, since the standard one can be made more stable. Of course, this option will be cheaper. After all, in this case you will only need to buy polyurethane foam. With the help of such material it will be possible to achieve high rigidity of the structure, so it will withstand any mechanical stress well.

• The structure should be insulated with a special rubber seal (where necessary). Leave the shelf for about a day until the foam dries completely.
• To prevent the shelf from creaking or rattling, its frame should be covered with insulating material;
• After this, it can be installed in its normal place.
