The manufacturer did not install a 4x4 transfer case with a switchable front axle on the Niva for a number of reasons, for example, to evenly distribute the load along the axles. But many SUV owners do not share this decision and try to make their car single-wheel drive. Do you know what uncoupling the front or rear axle of a VAZ 2121 does?
Installation of a disconnecting device
Disabling the front axle in the field does not cause any particular difficulties. A car enthusiast can produce it himself. The main thing is the sequence and accuracy of the actions: • You must first purchase the element to disable it.
- The floor covering is raised. The lever covers are carefully removed. The sensor terminal is disconnected. The lever switches to the “back” position. The transfer case is cleaned of dirt. The plug is unscrewed and the oil is drained. The front driveshaft is disconnected from the transfer case. The transfer case is dismantled. The nuts that secure the cover to the crankcase are unscrewed. The cover is removed and the coupling and shaft are dismantled. A new gasket is installed. The disconnecting element is installed in the vacant space.
• Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
You can watch the video at the bottom of the page for more details.
After completing the process, experts recommend checking the oil level in the transmission.
Using the front axle disconnect mechanism, the driver is able to switch operating modes of the car from the passenger compartment in a couple of seconds. You don't have to stop to perform the manipulation. Switching occurs even at high speed. This is quite convenient because, depending on the current situation, the car owner assesses the risks and quickly makes the right decision.
Recommendations
Experts recommend using the shift mechanism only when driving on asphalt roads, where the use of all-wheel drive is not necessary. You need to connect it when driving over rough terrain or in difficult weather conditions. Otherwise, the Niva runs the risk of getting into an accident or simply getting stuck in the mud.
Conclusion Nowadays, many foreign SUVs are equipped with a switching device at the factory. This is becoming a widespread phenomenon not only in Russia, but also far beyond its borders.
Installation of a special block
It is installed as follows:
- The axle drive housing has a cover; unscrew it with five nuts
- Remove the shaft and coupling
- We install the bridge block in place of the removed cover.
- Installing the transfer case in place
- If necessary, add transmission oil
The cost of this mechanism is around seven thousand rubles, but by installing it you will feel more confident when driving off-road, and at the same time save on gasoline when the need for all-wheel drive is not needed.
How to disable the front axle on a field: 1 comment
Yes, this was invented to squeeze out money. I drove 3 Nivas in 40 years and saw who removed the front driveshaft in order to disconnect the axle. A year later, I changed the rear one.
The Niva car became the first Soviet SUV to use an all-wheel drive transmission. A characteristic feature of the car is the center differential locking mechanism. There is an opinion among motorists that this mechanism serves to connect the front axle. However, the front-wheel drive Niva is always connected. You can figure out what drive the Niva has after studying the design of this unit.
Reviews and observations
Based on the experience of owners of the Lada 4x4 SUV, a number of advantages can be identified after disabling the front axle:
Rear-wheel drive on the VAZ 2121 has a number of disadvantages:
Why buy an all-wheel drive Niva and then disable the front axle? No need to drive an SUV outside the city? Saving on gasoline? It is worth considering whether it will be possible to reduce vehicle maintenance costs when, soon after one of the bridges is disconnected, it will be necessary to carry out premature repairs.
Niva drive device
The chassis of the car is made on the principle of permanent all-wheel drive - torque from the power unit is transmitted to all 4 wheels. This scheme improves the performance of the car when driving in off-road conditions, while simultaneously reducing the load on transmission parts.
The Chevrolet Niva drive consists of the following components:
- Gearbox.
- Transfer case.
- A pair of drive and cardan shafts.
- Front and rear axle gearboxes.
The transfer case is designed to distribute torque between the drive axles of the vehicle. The car is equipped with a two-speed transfer case, which provides:
- stable running of the machine when driving at low speed and at high engine speeds;
- power distribution between drive axles, depending on road grip.
The differential is one of the most important elements of the transmission. Its main purpose is to distribute traction force, and, if necessary, ensure rotation of two consumers at different angular speeds. The Chevrolet Niva drive transmission has three differentials:
- One for each axle (inter-wheel) - they allow the wheels of the same axle to rotate at different speeds.
- The third (interaxle action) - transmits power from the power unit to both axles of the vehicle. It also allows the shafts to operate at different angular speeds, depending on operating conditions, which significantly improves controllability.
A pair of cardan shafts (CV joint or cross design) provide connection between the transfer case and the drive axle gearboxes. Both car shafts have the same design - they are interchangeable.
The front and rear axles transmit force from the transfer case to the drive wheels through external and internal angular velocity joints.

How to remove the front axle gearbox on a loaf.
repair of the UAZ front axle begins with dismantling this unit and disassembling it. Knowing the reason for the gearbox wedge and knowing how to fix it, I went to a hardware store and bought 6 liters of kerosene. Kerosene turned out to be very expensive, 2 bottles of 3 liters cost me 700 rubles... I also went to Automaton in search of new bolts for the planetary gear, but found only ordinary ones, with a strength of 8.8... I bought a thread locker, sealant, a new spacer sleeve, oil seal and CV joint lube . Then I remembered that at my dacha I had the offal from a new factory gearbox, and from them I took the necessary bolts. I came home and started repairs. Using a Grover, I removed the roughness and burrs from the gearbox that arose from loose bolts. I took out the drive gear and washed its bearings in kerosene. I washed the pads on the self-block and the self-block itself, the main pair and also the gearbox housing itself. I put the spare parts under the battery to dry.
The stench from kerosene was all over the house, but there was nowhere to go... The next day, in order not to rush to the dacha, my friend and I moved the table with a vice to the house and we began assembling the gearbox. The old oil deflector washer was somehow all mangled, so I replaced it with a new one, and also installed a new oil seal, since the old one was torn.
Before screwing them into the GP driven gear, I lubricated all the bolts with blue thread locker.
Chevy Niva front axle structure:
1 – mud deflector; 2 – lower cover of the gearbox housing; 3 – drive gear bearings; 4 – differential housing; 5 – drain plug; 6 – filler and control hole plug; 7 – bearing of the internal hinge housing; 8 – oil seal; 9 – housing of the internal wheel drive hinge; 10 – spring washer; 11 – retaining ring; 12 – bearing cover; 13 – adjusting nut; 14 – differential box bearing; 15 – bearing cover; 16 – cover fastening bolt; 17 – support washer; 18 – satellite; 19 – axle gear; 20 – gearbox housing; 21 – breather; 22 – bearing cover of the internal hinge; 23 – satellite axis; 24 – adjusting ring; 25 – drive gear; 26 – bearing spacer; 27 – drive gear oil seal; 28 – flange.
The front axle of the Niva Chevrolet consists of a main gear and a differential installed in one housing. The differential, final drive gears and gearbox bearings of the front and rear axles are the same. The front axle gear housing is cast, covered with covers at the front and bottom. The crankcase covers are sealed with gaskets.
The principle of operation of all-wheel drive on a Chevrolet Niva
In normal mode, the Chevrolet Niva operates in high gear with the differential unlocked. Torque is transmitted from the power unit, through the gearbox and intermediate shaft, to a two-stage transfer case gearbox. A center differential is installed in the transfer case housing. It links the front and rear axles, allowing them to rotate at different speeds, depending on road conditions and direction of travel.
How does all-wheel drive work on a Niva with a locked differential?
When all-wheel drive is engaged, both cardan shafts are secured with a locking clutch. This promotes uniform transmission of traction force to both axles of the vehicle. Due to this, the vehicle's cross-country ability increases, but controllability deteriorates.
Advice: It is not recommended to use the lock mode on roads with good grip, as this will lead to accelerated tire wear, increased load on transmission parts and components, and will also increase fuel consumption.
Some useful tips
- Since the engine no longer bears additional load, you can replace the standard hard cushions of the power unit with softer ones, from VAZ classics.
- When attaching the eyes to the front beam of the bridge, welding should be carried out by an experienced welder who is familiar with the technique, which allows not to “release” the metal. The beam is a load-bearing structural element of the car, and its strength should not be reduced.
- The welding areas should be cleaned of scale, then the joints should be thoroughly primed and painted.
- After untying, the RPM should not touch the engine and beam either in a static position or while the vehicle is moving.
- If you are producing a suspension lift, you should select a decoupling kit taking into account the increased angles of the CV joint and driveshaft.
- The silent blocks of the brackets of an untethered gearbox are subject to wear in the same way as the power unit cushions or suspension elements.
- The replacement of these elements should be included in your list of operations during maintenance.
I hope the material presented will help you when carrying out self-detachment work. In order to decide whether to carry out such an upgrade or not, watch the video below. It clearly shows what mutual vibrations are transmitted from the engine to the axle and vice versa during movement. The RPM of the NIVA car in the video is rigidly attached to the power plant.

How to enable all-wheel drive on a Chevrolet Niva? There is an option to block the center differential of the Chevy Niva both when the car is stationary and when it is not moving.
This is done with the clutch pedal depressed using the transfer case control lever, which is located behind the huge gear selector. When the lever is in the neutral position, you need to pull it towards the driver. If you later press in the opposite direction, a lower gear will engage with the center differential locked at a ratio other than 3.5.1. If you pull towards yourself, a lower gear is put into effect (gear ratio 1.5).
When the lever is in this position, the corresponding yellowish pictogram lights up on the dashboard. Disabling the front axle on a Chevrolet Niva. four-wheel drive. How to disable. If you cannot follow these instructions, try repeating the procedure while driving the vehicle.

Switching to a lower gear is also allowed without stopping the Niva completely, but this can only be done by experienced drivers. The fact is that the transfer case, unlike the gearbox, does not have synchronizers installed. Changing from a lower gear to a higher gear while the car is moving is undesirable, although it is allowed in extreme cases.
It is not recommended to keep the center differential of the wheels in locked mode at all times, especially when driving on asphalt roads, as this will not only lead to increased fuel consumption by the vehicle and poor handling, but also to the breakdown of expensive transmission components.
When to use a differential lock
The Chevrolet Niva has high cross-country ability in all types of off-road and mountainous terrain. Many of them can be easily overcome with a locked differential. This driving mode is recommended:
- on roads with reduced cross-country ability;
- on steep ascents and descents;
- when moving on dry (loose) sandy surfaces;
- when driving on ice, deep snow or crust.
