Transmission oil TAD-17 is a prominent representative of Russian transmission oils. The wide scope of its application and accessibility generates logical interest among motorists.

Below we will look in detail at what TAD-17 oil is, where it is used, and also what import standards it meets.

Characteristics

A high-quality transmission lubricant should not contain harmful additives and components. In the TAD-17 product, the ash content is about 0.3%, and the sulfur content does not exceed 2-2.3%. The critical flash point is 200C.

Since motor oil provides lubrication of transmission mechanisms, special requirements are placed on it. By forming a protective microfilm on parts, the liquid reduces their wear and also eliminates the possibility of welding mechanisms in contact areas.

In addition, TAD-17 oil extends the operational life of the transmission due to the content of extreme pressure additives and a set of sulfur-phosphorus additives.

If we analyze the SAE specifications, it refers to the viscosity index 80w90. Heat-resistant, allowing to reduce sounds and noise that occur during transmission operation. Thanks to its high anti-foam properties, it protects system mechanisms from corrosive effects.

Working properties of petroleum product

The production criteria for TAD-17i oil are usually specified in accordance with SAE, a community of automotive engineers that integrates lubricant products by viscosity. According to technical documentation according to SAE, the viscosity index of the product is marked with the code 85W-90, and according to the API criterion with the code GL-5. These criteria indicate the operating thermal amplitude of the product. The operating temperature at which the oil can be operated varies from twenty-five degrees minus to one hundred and forty plus.

The manufacturer and consumers of TAD-17 oil note the following functional indicators:

  1. Increasing the wear resistance of machine parts and components operating under temperature changes and friction.
  2. High anti-corrosion criteria, which increases the resistance of mechanisms to rust.
  3. Preventing the formation of nicks on parts and transformations of transport metal structures, which reduces the “sticking” factor of devices.
  4. Minimizing noise during operation of units.
  5. Heat resistance and prevention of foaming during intensive vehicle operation.
  6. High heat dissipation rates during intense friction, which is characterized by high temperatures.
  7. High lubrication criteria.

TAD-17 oil is used to reliably protect transport units, as well as extend their service life. According to the instructions, the service life of the lubricant is calculated by the mileage of the vehicle, varying from sixty to eighty thousand kilometers. Sold in almost all auto stores in containers of various sizes, it can also be sold on tap.

What is the difference between TAD-17 and TAD-17I

Transmission oils TAD-17 and TAD-17I are sold on the market today. The differences between them are insignificant, but they exist. To understand what these differences are, let’s look at the decoding of the designations of these lubricants.

TAD-17 is deciphered as follows:

  • T – for transmission units;
  • A – automobile;
  • D – with extended service life;
  • 17 – average viscosity at operating temperature.

By default, the oil uses an additive package developed and produced by Russian enterprises. The letter “I” in the TAD-17I product version means that imported components were used as modifying additives.

However, this feature has virtually no effect on the performance characteristics of the TAD-17I. When it comes to simple oils, Russian additive manufacturers are not inferior to foreign ones.

It would not be a big mistake to say that in operational terms, TAD-17I is a complete analogue of TAD-17 oil with the only difference in the country of production of the modifying components.

Performance indicators

High-quality lubricant should not contain mechanical impurities. The concentration of sulfur elements in TAD-17 is 2-2.4 percent. The ash content is three tenths of a percent. The flash point in an open crucible is 200 degrees.

Due to the fact that this petroleum product is classified as a consumable for transmission, special requirements are put forward for its properties. It should significantly reduce the wear of spare parts and prevent them from welding in areas of contact.

Oil liquid TAD-17

The operating period of the unit when using TAD-17 motor oil is greatly increased. This is due to the anti-seize additives contained in the consumables.

According to the SAE classification, which divides oils by viscosity, TAD-17 is classified as 85W-90. This is a heat-resistant petroleum product that significantly reduces the operating noise of the unit. The lubricant is not subject to foaming and provides excellent protection of transmission parts from corrosion. It can be safely poured into both new vehicles and cars with considerable mileage.

Product Features

Transmission oil TAD-17 is a product that belongs to lubricating emulsions actively used in the automotive industry. The technical purpose of all transmission fluids, without exception, is anti-wear properties. Depending on the degree of these features, the wear of metal structures that come into contact with each other during the operation of vehicles is minimized. Transmission components and assemblies operate at high speeds and temperature changes, which without lubricating fluid will provoke welding of parts and their deformation at the points of contact of metal mechanisms under the influence of friction and rotation. Oils provide parts with high-quality lubrication, which envelops them and creates a protective film on the surface, which prolongs the life of parts operating under intense conditions.

According to technical characteristics, transmission emulsions are divided into several categories, depending on the rank of which the scope of use of the product and its operational criteria are determined. TAD-17 oil is ranked among the highest, fifth category of lubricating fluids, according to the nomenclature of the CIS countries, which allows the use of the petroleum product in all areas of the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, as well as in all general industrial production. Today, the manufacturer produces this product under the label TAD-17i. The abbreviation is interpreted as follows: “T” – transport, “A” – automotive, “D” – distillate oil, “i” – using composite additives.

TAD-17 oil is manufactured in accordance with GOST standards, marked as TM-5–18, where TM is an abbreviation of the phrase “transport oil”, the number five identifies the category to which the product belongs, and eighteen is the gear ratio of the lubricating viscosity.

Possible analogs of TAD-17

If you compare the substance with other compounds, then there is not enough time for this. There are a lot of similar substances and they are very diverse. If compared with products labeled according to the American system, then TAD-17 will correspond to oil of the GL-5 category. They do not completely coincide with the Russian composition, but the main characteristics are very similar. In the European classification system, these will be SAE 80W90 transmission lubricants.

For foreign cars, oil should be chosen extremely carefully. It is better to take into account the recommendations of the manufacturers and buy exactly the composition that is recommended

Product Description

TAD 17 forms a strong, reliable layer of oil coating throughout the protected system. Thanks to its special molecular structure, this layer has increased strength. This need is dictated by the very heavy and complex operation of the device. During operation, friction processes occur, the temperature of individual system components increases, and the total load reaches maximum values.

Transmission oil TAD 17 effectively protects technological units, increasing the wear resistance of both individual parts and the entire device as a whole. Due to the protection, uninterrupted operation of all components is ensured at elevated temperatures and temperature changes, high pressure and load on the circulation component.

Where is TAD-17 oil used?

The operation of the transmission is associated with constant high friction of parts, high pressure on the gears, high sliding speed and a significant temperature range.

A special transmission fluid is necessary to create the thinnest but strongest film, which, covering the system elements, protects them from rapid wear. At the same time, the oil composition must prevent squeezing out the lubricant from the meshing points and have special extreme pressure properties to prevent premature damage to gear teeth and welding of parts due to overheating. TAD-17 fully meets these requirements.

TAD-17 is poured into manual transmissions and used as a lubricant for drive axles and transfer cases, as well as manual control systems. This fluid is compatible with five types of gears:

  1. cylindrical;
  2. worm;
  3. conical;
  4. spiral-conical;
  5. hypoid.

TAD-17 oil is designed for passenger cars and trucks of Russian brands - VAZ, UAZ, KamAZ, etc. It is also used in agricultural units (tractors, combines), electric vehicles, equipment for industrial production and repair. Product described:

  • increases the wear resistance of transmission system elements;
  • protects them from jamming;
  • prevents overheating of parts, has the required degree of heat resistance;
  • has an anti-corrosion effect on metal;
  • reduces the noise of the operating transmission.

Please note: in retail the liquid is sold both in factory containers of various sizes and for bottling
