Car breakdown is a common and commonplace situation. It is not so easy to prevent it, even if you carefully monitor all components and assemblies and carry out preventive work on time.

Each car has its own weaknesses. In the case of the VAZ 2110, these include steering tips. If they are not replaced promptly in case of damage, you may face complete destruction of the entire steering mechanism. It’s hardly worth saying what financial losses you will incur.

How do they look

What to choose?

When starting to replace tips, most owners of domestic tens ask themselves questions: which ones are better?

You have two options to choose from.

Part type Peculiarities
Factory originals Good quality, full compliance with the design of your car.
Imported, manufactured under contract There are different manufacturers, so the quality may vary. If you find a good contractor, the level of tips they produce may be higher than the factory original. But the cost will be slightly different.

As you can see, both options have their own characteristics and advantages. So make the choice yourself.

When choosing tips, pay special attention to the quality and integrity of the rubber boot.

Removing the tie rod ends

It is quite difficult to replace the steering tips of a VAZ-2110 without camber; the adjustment procedure will still have to be done. To work you will need tools such as:

  1. Set of steering tips.
  2. Penetrating lubricant WD-40. If there is none, brake fluid will do.
  3. Set of spanners and socket heads with ratchet.
  4. Pliers.
  5. Wire brush.
  6. Special puller for rod ends of VAZ-2110 and similar models.

It is advisable to use only a puller when working; removing the hinge using a mounting blade or crowbar is quite problematic. Removing the tie rod end is performed as follows:

  1. The side of the car being repaired is raised using a jack, and the wheel mounting bolts are first loosened.
  2. The wheel is removed.
  3. The junction of the steering knuckle and the rod end is cleaned.
  4. If there is too much contamination, it is necessary to use a penetrating lubricant.
  5. Remove the cotter pin that secures the connection.
  6. Unscrew the nut using a “19” wrench.
  7. Install the puller and remove the joint from the hole in the steering knuckle.

It is advisable, before removing the hinge, to unscrew the nuts that secure the tip on the rod.

When to change

The design of the elements is such that they are located at the ends of the steering rods. Hence the name - tips.

The rods themselves have a fairly impressive service life, so they are changed quite rarely. The same cannot be said about the tips.

If you follow the instructions provided in the instruction manual, then replacement should be performed approximately every 40 thousand kilometers. But still the figure is average. Depending on the situations, operating conditions and the quality of the currently installed elements, repairs may be required later or earlier.

The following factors influence the degree of wear of steering system components:

  • Vehicle operating conditions;
  • The quality of the tips used;
  • Driving style of the car owner;
  • Quality of roads, etc.

Signs of breakdown

At the first signs of a malfunction of the limit switches, appropriate measures should be taken to eliminate them.

You can determine that the elements are damaged and no longer perform their job as efficiently as before by the following characteristic signs:

  • The car is difficult to control. This is especially noticeable when entering sharp turns;
  • On tires, the tread pattern begins to wear unevenly;
  • Uncharacteristic sounds are heard from the front of the car. Moreover, they can come from one side or from two simultaneously.

These signs of breakdown may indicate not only faulty steering tips. Therefore, mandatory verification is required.

Do-it-yourself replacement of VAZ-2110 steering tips: features of the repair

The steering tips of the VAZ-2110 must be replaced approximately every 40 thousand kilometers. But sometimes it is necessary more often if there is damage to this mechanism. It is imperative to carefully monitor the condition of the steering mechanism to prevent its breakdown. In the steering, the weakest links are the ends that connect the rods to the steering knuckles of the shock absorber struts. The cost of such elements is not very high, and almost every motorist can replace them.

Examination

Yes, in order to accurately determine that the limit switches are the culprit for the uncharacteristic behavior of the car, they should be checked. How to do it? Let's get a look.

  1. Examine the condition of the node visually. To do this, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. This will allow you to look at the left tip. To visually inspect the right unit, you need to turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  2. Look at the rubber boot. It fits onto the tip. The presence of signs of rupture or cracks clearly indicates that the steering element needs to be replaced.
  3. If you do not do this, dirt will penetrate through the gaps and cracks in the boot, which will ultimately lead to very rapid wear of the part and can harm other components of your car.
  4. You can also lift the car with a jack by hanging the wheel in the air. Grasp the tip with your hands and shake it.
  5. If there is play, then the replacement will have to be performed on both sides simultaneously.

The defect is obvious

Experts strongly do not recommend changing tips individually. Even if the second element is intact, it is better to perform a double replacement.

The first step is to lift the front part of the VAZ 2110-2112 with a jack and remove the wheel, having first unscrewed all its mounting bolts. Then, using pliers, remove the cotter pin that secures the ball pin fastening nut:

Now you can unscrew the nut, since there is nothing stopping it anymore. It is advisable to first spray it with a penetrating lubricant:

Now we need a puller. We dress it in this way, as clearly shown in the photo below:

Now use a wrench to turn the puller bolt until the tip pin pops out of its seat.

As you can see, everything is ready from below and all that remains is to unscrew it from the steering rod. To do this you will need a 27 wrench. Since I didn’t have one on hand, I had to use an adjustable one:

If it starts to turn away together with the coupling, then you can remove everything together, and then unscrew and separate it all in a vice. If the nut moves out of its place normally, then you can twist the tip clockwise in order to completely remove it from the rod:

It is worth keeping in mind that when unscrewing, it is better to remember the number of revolutions made, since during future installation this will allow you to maintain the approximate toe-in of the front wheels. You can buy new tie rod ends for a VAZ 2110-2112 for about 700 rubles per pair, although there are cheaper prices. But it’s better not to save too much on such spare parts, so as not to repeat this procedure again in a month.

How to check traction

Pay attention to how the steering wheel rotates. If free play begins to appear (and increases over time), then this is a clear sign that there is a problem with the steering. To find out for sure that the tips are to blame, you need to carefully examine them. Pay attention to whether there are any sounds when turning the steering wheel. The essence of all diagnostic work is to make sure that it is the tip hinge that has failed, and not the ball or support bearing of the strut.

Turn the steering wheel to the far right to gain access to the left wheel steering mechanism. Using your hand, try to move the hinge from side to side. If at the same time you hear unnecessary sounds, there are jams, or the movement is too easy, then it is necessary to replace the steering tips on the VAZ 2110. Any motorist who knows how to handle keys can do this work with his own hands.

How to replace steering tips on a VAZ 2110

The normal functioning of the steering of any car directly depends not only on the serviceability of the rack (or, for example, a “worm-roller” type mechanism), but also on the condition of the tie rod ends. If they are badly worn, the driver hears a knocking sound from the front suspension and feels a decrease in the severity of feedback, due to which he constantly has to steer. These symptoms indicate wear on the tie rod ends.

To confirm or refute the assumption, you need to put the car on a jack and alternately shake the front wheels left and right and up and down. Do you have significant play and very free wheel movement? It's time to change the tips. On some cars, for example, on the VAZ-2110 and its family, this can be done right in your garage, and below we will describe how.

Tools and materials:

You will need the following:

  • jack;
  • wheel wrench;
  • wrench 19 (socket);
  • key 27 (regular);
  • pliers;
  • special puller for ball joints and steering ends;
  • new tips (2 pcs., they are replaced as a set);
  • VD-40.

1)

First, you should put the car on a jack and, using a wheel wrench, remove the wheel. Next, take the pliers and pull out the special cotter pin that secures the ball pin nut.

2)

Then you can take hold of the nut itself, already devoid of a stopper. If it turns sour, generously spray it with WD-40, wait a few minutes and unscrew it.

3)

At the next stage, it is extremely problematic to do without a puller (its appearance can be seen in the photo below), so if you don’t have one, buy it at any auto store.

4)

Use a wrench to turn the puller bolt. It will compress, acting on the finger, and in the end it will turn out as desired.

5)

The tip has been removed from the steering knuckle side; all that remains is to dismantle it from the thrust side. Here you need a 27 wrench, but if you don’t have one, an adjustable wrench will do.

6)

It is possible that the tip will turn away not alone, but together with the coupling. Then you will have to unscrew them in a vice. But if the nut is very soured, then the tip will unscrew alone (by the way, you need to turn it clockwise, not counterclockwise).

7)

Don’t be lazy and count, and then write down how many turns you made to unscrew the tip. When installing a new one, this will help to install the wheels more or less evenly so that you can get to a car service center, where they will do an accurate wheel alignment.

8)

There is a short tip on the left wheel side, and a long one on the right side, but there is no fundamental difference in replacing them, so, having finished changing one, proceed to the other - the sequence of actions is the same.

In conclusion, we note that the price of the issue is approximately 550 - 700 rubles. for a set of 2 tips (you may also have to buy a puller). It’s better to take the original from AvtoVAZ, but you can also buy a non-original (but not from China). You should not buy spare parts from China, since they have a very “floating” quality.

Installation of tie rod ends

In order to ensure the most accurate alignment of the front wheels, it is necessary to calculate how many revolutions the old steering tip is twisted. But in this case, you can only roughly establish the toe-in. More precise adjustments can only be made on special stands. Installation of tips is carried out in this order:

  1. Install a new tip. It is desirable that the distance from the squeegee to the center of the tip be the same as on the old element.
  2. The hinge pin must be inserted into the hole in the steering knuckle.
  3. Tighten the nut and secure it with a cotter pin.
  4. Tighten all threaded connections.

After replacing the steering tips of the VAZ-2110, it is necessary to carry out the procedure for adjusting the camber and toe of the front wheels. It is quite difficult to do this on your own; it is better to use the services of a car repair shop.
