When trying to delay major repairs, you need to diagnose the power plant, replace one of the unit parts, or simply tune the engine for full operation. If a set of such measures does not work and the problems remain, it will be almost impossible to dismiss the overhaul of the power plant. Disassembly, repair and installation of the engine

Four bolts secure the gearbox to the engine block. The engine and body on VAZ 2108-21099 cars are attached using one cushion. Suspend the engine on a cable and unscrew all the bolts, pre-treating the connections with penetrating lubricant to make work easier. For convenience, you can remove the hinges at the very beginning and move the hood to the side, this way you will have more space. After the final removal of the engine, you begin to disassemble it.

DIY VAZ 2109 engine repair video
1. Remove the engine from the VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099 (see “Removing the engine”). 2. Place the engine on strong supports. 3. Carefully remove the gearbox. Make sure that the splined end of the input shaft does not rest on the diaphragm spring petals. 4. Remove the clutch from the engine (see “Clutch repair” in section 5 “Transmission”). 5. Remove the camshaft drive belt, the tension roller and the spacer washer installed under it (see “Replacing the camshaft drive belt on VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099 cars and adjusting the belt tension”) (see “Replacing the tension roller”) . 6. Remove the camshaft gear (see “Replacing the cylinder head gasket”).
7. Unscrew the four bolts (three of them also secure the water pump) and the nut securing the rear camshaft drive belt cover, and remove the cover.
8. Insert a screwdriver between the water pump housing flange and the block, and slide the water pump out of its seat. Remove the water pump. 9. Remove the head from the cylinder block (see “Replacing the cylinder head gasket”).
10. Unscrew the sixteen oil sump mounting bolts and remove the oil sump along with the gasket.
11. Unscrew the three bolts securing the oil receiver (spring washers are installed under the bolt heads) and remove the oil receiver.
12. Unscrew the bolt (a spring washer is installed under the bolt head) securing the oil level sensor in the oil sump. Remove the oil level sensor from the cylinder block. If necessary, rotate the crankshaft so that the crankshaft counterweight does not interfere with removing the oil level sensor.
13. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston to be removed is at bottom dead center (BDC). Unscrew the two nuts securing the connecting rod cover.
14. Remove the connecting rod cover. If dismantling the connecting rod cover is difficult, first remove the connecting rod cover with gentle blows of a hammer. The cylinder number on the connecting rod cap may not be visible; in this case, mark the connecting rod cap with the cylinder number.
15. Push the connecting rod with the handle of a hammer into the cylinder and carefully remove the piston and connecting rod from the cylinder. At the same time, make sure that the lower head of the connecting rod does not touch the cylinder mirror, otherwise the mirror may be damaged. Remove the remaining pistons in the same way.
NOTE If you intend to remove the piston from the connecting rod, mark the piston with the cylinder number to avoid mixing up the pistons during installation. The cylinder number is stamped on the connecting rod, just like on the cover; if it is not visible, mark the connecting rod.
16. Remove the flywheel (see “Removing, installing and troubleshooting the flywheel”).
17. Remove six bolts (spring washers are installed under the bolt heads), remove the crankshaft rear oil seal holder and gasket.
18. Remove the timing pulley from the crankshaft. If the key does not fit tightly in the crankshaft groove, remove the crankshaft key so as not to lose it.
19. Unscrew the six bolts (there are spring washers under the bolt heads), remove the oil pump and gasket.
Cylinder block
In any case, it needs to be repaired. First of all, clean the entire surface of oil, dirt and other deposits. The repair consists of boring the sleeves to the required size. You cannot carry out this procedure yourself; it is better to trust a specialist. The lathe who carries out the boring must have the skills to operate the machine. Do not trust such a task to an inexperienced person. Its reliability depends on how correctly the overhaul of the VAZ 2109 engine is done.
There are two boring options: under the mirror and with a fine mesh. In the second case, honing is done - the entire inner surface of the liners is covered with thin lines. Some people claim that this gives a boost in power. But in reality, the picture is the opposite - the wear of the piston rings increases, since the surface of the cylinder is similar to an ordinary file. Fortunately, this continues for 10-20 thousand km, after which the sleeve takes on a mirror-like appearance. Moreover, the geometry is not always ideal. For this reason, it is better to carry out boring under a mirror.
Cylinder head repair
Continuing the repair of the VAZ 2109 engine with their own hands, they begin to repair the engine head. If the diagnostics revealed traces of poor-quality milling, and antifreeze leaked into the oil channel through scratches on the surface of the head. In order to restore the cylinder head, it should be removed and ground - a smooth surface will prevent oil from leaking and losing its professional properties.
Continuing disassembly of the cylinder head, remove the rocker with the spring base and examine the place where the rocker comes into contact with the spring. As the rocker wears out, its upper part becomes noticeably rounded - when installing the rocker obliquely, better regulation of the gap between it and the GDV shaft is necessary. And if the rocker itself is installed at an angle relative to the shaft, then it is no longer suitable and must be replaced with a new spare part. Then the valves and other parts are removed, the shaft and pushers with washers for adjustment are removed.
The condition of newly opened wells with pushers that operate inside them is checked. If the valve guide is severely worn during further operation of the machine, the pusher deviates from the specified trajectory, and the wells cease to be round and take on an unusual oval shape. In this case, it is no longer enough to change only the guides - it is better not to save money and buy a new cylinder head - in extreme cases, the head is processed on a boring machine and the bronze bushing is pressed.
Next, you need to start inspecting the studs and the integrity of the threads on them - if the threads are broken, it is better to replace the stud with a new one. Then the head will easily take its place, because a pin with a poor-quality thread is screwed in with considerable effort, and is even more difficult to unscrew. After restoration, restored or new spare parts are returned to their places along with a new cylinder head gasket.
Is it worth lightening the pistons?
If you are interested in the idea of tuning in order to increase power, then the answer is clear: it is necessary to lighten the pistons! But if it is in your interests only to make repairs, then it is enough to install new ones. In any case, the increase in horsepower will be noticeable, as engine compression will increase. It is best to entrust the work of lightening to the same turner who is engaged in boring the cylinder block. As you can see, you cannot do a major engine overhaul with your own hands; you will have to resort to the services of specialists.
Crankshaft and its relief
This is perhaps the most massive element of the entire engine. If you only need to carry out a major overhaul of the VAZ engine, then you can limit yourself to replacing the main and connecting rod bearings. But if you are looking to increase power, you will need to do a lot of work. Moreover, it will again be impossible to do without the services of a turner. After all, only by using professional equipment can you get rid of “excess” metal on the surface of the crankshaft.
But don’t forget about one feature. The crankshaft has an axis of rotation, its center of gravity is located in such a way that no beating occurs. When you grind off metal, the alignment is disrupted. And by installing such a crankshaft, you will simply destroy both the bearings and the cylinder block housing. Therefore, after lightening, it is necessary to do balancing in order to restore the alignment of the shaft. But after a major overhaul, the engine will be much more powerful, which will surprise you beyond words.
Overhaul of VAZ 2109 engine

First, a rough lapping paste is applied to the seat. Using a drill, rotate the valve in different directions (it is highly desirable that there be an equal number of revolutions). After getting rid of large surface irregularities, you need to apply finishing paste and grind in until shiny. Maximum contact between valve and seat is now ensured. The main thing is to install them as they were ground in; elements cannot be swapped. In this case, it will be impossible to achieve maximum tightness.

In any instructions for repairing and removing the engine from a VAZ-2108, 2109, 21099, etc. a method for removing the engine along with the gearbox is described, but it is long and very difficult, especially if there is no lift and everything has to be removed by hand. I will explain how one person can remove the engine of a VAZ-2108, 2109, 21099, etc. and without trying too hard.
We begin to remove the engine without removing the gearbox, first lift the front wheels with a jack and place a brick under them, or simply run over the bricks and secure the car with the handbrake or put something under the rear wheels to prevent the car from rolling. Since it’s summer and hot, I’ll remove the engine in the garden under the shade of a tree. After the car is installed with the front wheels on bricks, we begin to remove the engine, first drain the oil from the engine and remove the air filter, but be careful; the wires approach the filter; carefully disconnect them; in the photo the engine is already without an air filter.

- Excessive pressure in the oil lubrication system indicates that the pressure relief valve is stuck or its spring is too stiff. After replacing the appropriate elements, this problem is eliminated.
- An increase in oil consumption can be caused by increased wear of piston rings, engine seals, valve stems, guide bushings, and oil seals.

- Every 10,000 kilometers it is necessary to carry out diagnostics of the chassis.
- After 60,000 kilometers, the timing belt needs to be replaced.
- Spark plugs are changed every 30,000 kilometers.

Engine overhaul
The need for major engine repairs may be indicated by:
- Instability in the operation of the unit.

When performing work, the technical characteristics of the unit are restored to values that correspond to the original indicators. To do this, the engine is pulled out of the VAZ 2109, disassembled, and a defect list is drawn up. - The spark plugs and coolant temperature sensor are unscrewed.

- It is immediately necessary to check the compression pressure in the cylinders if you set a goal to assess the condition of the piston. You can do this procedure yourself - for this purpose you need to install a pressure gauge instead of a pressure sensor. Low pressure indicates possible wear on the hydraulic pump or bearings (or maybe both).
- Unstable engine operation, knocking, “incomprehensible” noise, loss of power, increased fuel consumption - these signs may indicate an engine overhaul, especially if several are observed at once. This, of course, is to try to tune the engine; if this does not bring results, then normal mechanical work will be required to restore the correct operation of various engine components.
